Syracuse football currently checks in near the end of CBS Sports’ “Bottom 25,” which arranges the sport’s 25 lowest-ranked squads.

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli has published his latest version of the “Bottom 25,” where he slots the 25 lowest-ranked teams across college football, and Syracuse football is hovering near the basement on a national scale.

In all fairness, though, the Orange has only played one game, as have many of the crews on this list, so to truly say that the ‘Cuse is one of the worst groups in all of college football, to me, is a bit of a stretch.

However, Syracuse football did get crushed in its season opener this past Saturday afternoon at the hands of highly rated North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Furthermore, as Fornelli notes, because multiple conferences, including the Big Ten and the Pac-12, have postponed their 2020 football stanzas, there are fewer overall units from which to choose.

"“There are only 76 of the 130 FBS teams currently playing this fall. That’s 41.5% of our usual field that’s no longer available. It also means that 32.9% of the 76 teams remaining will be ranked here every week,” he writes."

Syracuse football is currently one of the lowest-ranked squads nationwide, according to a CBS Sports report.

The Orange, at present, is No. 4 in the Bottom 25, with only No. 3 Middle Tennessee, No. 2 UTEP and No. 1 Navy further down the line in the CBS Sports ratings.

Here’s what Fornelli said about Syracuse football in his article. “Syracuse never looked like it would beat North Carolina on Saturday, but the Orange trailed only 10-6 after three quarters. Then things fell apart in a hurry, and the final score was 31-6. This week the Orange are on the road again facing Pitt.”

Other Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the Bottom 25 are No. 9 Wake Forest, No. 17 Florida State, No. 19 Duke and No. 24 N.C. State, although the Wolfpack have yet to suit up in 2020.

I’m not sure that I agree with having the Blue Devils among those in this list. Duke played a top-10 Notre Dame squad tough on the road last weekend before eventually losing, 27-13.

Meanwhile, for Syracuse football, the ‘Cuse can make a strong step toward exiting the Bottom 25 by upsetting No. 25 Pittsburgh at Heinz Field in a few days’ time.
