Syracuse basketball transfer Alan Griffin has been ruled eligible for the upcoming season by the NCAA, no longer being forced to sit one year.
Syracuse basketball has reported that the NCAA has granted a waiver to allow Alan Griffin immediate eligibility for the upcoming season.
Griffin, who transferred from Illinois, said he was “relieved” in a statement on cuse.com, saying, “It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since I came to Syracuse.”
Syracuse basketball posted to their social media with the news, which included a picture of Griffin backing up that feeling he described.
Griffin was one of the top transfers this offseason, after averaging 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds at power-six conference school Illinois last season. At 6-foot-5, Griffin has the potential to somewhat mend the loss of Elijah Hughes deciding to enter his name in the 2020 NBA Draft.
The addition of Griffin also gives Syracuse basketball a very solid backcourt. Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard III were already thought of as one of the top shooting duos in all of college hoops. Now, Griffin adds a third scorer to the mix, both adding to the team’s great guards and giving head coach Jim Boeheim another player to put in the game in crucial moments.
The statement released by Syracuse said that Griffin has been taking summer classes on The Hill as well as participating in workouts allowed by the NCAA. However, with classes starting on August 24 for the fall semester, this news is an early A+ grade for Griffin, Boeheim, and everyone in the ‘Cuse basketball program.
Plans for an official season going forward will be announced in mid-September by the NCAA, but if it does go on, Griffin will be in a uniform and ready to play.
