As the 2020 season inches closer, Syracuse football may see its depth at running back drop with Garrison Johnson entering the transfer portal.

Syracuse football running back Garrison Johnson has entered his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal, according to a report, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that he will ultimately depart the Hill.

A 247Sports article reported on the news of Johnson, a redshirt freshman, opting to put his name into the transfer portal. If he did elect to head to another squad, he would need to receive a waiver from the NCAA should he seek to immediately compete.

Johnson’s bio on cuse.com lists him as 5-foot-10, 247 pounds, with his hometown in Rosharon, Texas. A member of the 2019 class, Johnson got rated as three stars by both the 247Sports recruiting service as well as the 247Sports Composite.

He attended Manvel High School in Manvel, Texas, and had a handful of other scholarship offers besides from the Orange. Those additional offers included from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference crew Virginia, along with a pair of Big Ten Conference members in Indiana and Nebraska, says his bio on the 247Sports Web site.

Coming out of high school, the 247Sports Composite placed Johnson as the No. 1,300 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting cycle, as well as the No. 85 running back, and the No. 168 player in the state of Texas. Meanwhile, 247Sports had him as the No. 83 running back and the No. 178 prospect in Texas.

Throughout his prep-school career, Johnson collected more than 5,000 rushing yards and 68 touchdowns, including 1,500 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior, when he received Manvel High School’s MVP honors, per cuse.com.

A two-time captain at Manvel High School, Johnson was named to the 11-5A Division II All-District first team in 2018, according to cuse.com.

The 247Sports story notes that with Johnson potentially leaving Syracuse football, the No. 1 running-back spot is expected to center on junior Jarveon Howard and redshirt senior Abdul Adams.
