Syracuse football has completed its 2022 non-conference schedule with the addition of the Wagner Seahawks. Here’s why this game is a solid fit for the Cuse.

We haven’t even begun the 2020 college football season and Syracuse football is already focusing on 2022. No, not really, because Tommy DeVito and co are primed for what should be a fantastic season this year. However, knowing that two years down the road is set is a good feeling for any program.

This Wagner game, in particular, adds a nice balance to the rest of the Orange 2022 non-conference slate. According to cuse.com, Syracuse will also host Purdue and Notre Dame, to go along with a road game against Connecticut.

To have home games against a Big Ten school in Purdue and one of most nationally renowned programs in Notre Dame is a blessing. Not only does it create intrigue for the season at hand, but it will also help in recruiting, ticket sales, and future scheduling.

The road game against UConn is the first of a small series between the former rivals. It’s always key for teams to keep old rivalries in check, and it’s not a bad idea to schedule a game with a weaker team in Connecticut, as games against Purdue and Notre Dame already make the Syracuse non-conference schedule in tip-top shape.

Finally, the Wagner game pairs well with UConn to balance out everything. It’ll be a home game for Syracuse football, likely the last non-conference match-up before the daunting ACC play starts. The Notre Dame game is currently TBD, meaning it could be the week of September 3rd, but it could also be in the mix of the ACC schedule.

Nonetheless, Wagner creates a game where Syracuse can work on anything needed to fine-tune before the ACC. As an FCS team, the Orange still need to respect them, but there will be a talent disparity between the two ball clubs. With this being said, it’ll be interesting to see two in-state squads go at it, regardless of level.

For game notes purposes, this one hasn’t been close. In two games, Syracuse is 2-0, with a 54-0 win in 2013 and a 62-7 blowout victory in 2018.

Our eyes are still focused on the 2020 season, which can’t come soon enough. But the 2022 season is already creating intrigue.
