Syracuse Football: Orange in the mix for elite 2022 QB Peter Delaportas
By Neil Adler
Pro-style quarterback Peter Delaportas, recently offered by Syracuse football, is athletic, strong and accurate on the move.
Peter Delaportas is a top-10 pro-style quarterback in the 2022 class, and Syracuse football has entered the fray to land the four-star prospect.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Delaportas, a rising junior who attends Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta, N.J., is slotted by 247Sports as the No. 236 player overall in his class, as well as the No. 7 pro-style quarterback and the No. 5 guy in the state of New Jersey.
The Orange offered a scholarship to Delaportas only a few days ago, a development that he revealed on Twitter. Per a review of the 247Sports Web site and Rivals.com, Delaportas, who also excels in wrestling, presently holds eight football scholarship offers.
Besides the ‘Cuse, the offers have come from Boston College, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Temple, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
Syracuse football target Peter Delaportas, a premier 2022 pro-style QB, will keep getting high-major offers, experts say.
Because the novel coronavirus pandemic has halted in-person recruiting, at least for now, that also resulted in college coaches not doing their typical quarterback evaluations this past spring.
Once coaches can get back to in-person evaluations, Delaportas should see his offers climb, according to Bobby Deren, an editor, senior writer and recruiting analyst for ScarletNation.com.
“When all is said and done, Delaportas is likely to be one of the more sought-after quarterback recruits in the northeast region as part of the 2022 class,” Deren says.
Brian Dohn, a 247Sports national recruiting analyst, wrote this evaluation of Delaportas in mid-March. “Excellent frame with shoulder width to add 15 pounds. High-level athlete and very good wrestler. Great competitor and leader. Very good at pre-snap reads. Spins ball well and throws catchable ball. Nice touch on deep passes. Trusts arm to get into tight windows. Shows ability to extend plays. Accurate on the move. Needs to work through progressions. Has to continue to improve arm strength. Must get stronger in upper body. Sometimes uses a lot of shoulder movement to add zip to throw. Locks onto receivers. Multi-year starter at Top 20 program. Day 3 NFL draft potential.”
Per the 247Sports Web site, Delaportas is the second pro-style quarterback that Syracuse has offered in the 2022 class. The other is three-star prospect Henry Belin, out of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, N.Y.
