Syracuse Basketball: Donte Greene adds to loaded Boeheim’s Army roster
By Neil Adler
Former Syracuse basketball player Donte Greene is the eighth member of the Boeheim’s Army roster.
At this juncture, with former Syracuse basketball star Donte Greene giving Boeheim’s Army eight really talented players, there’s virtually no way that this crew of Orange guys won’t get selected to compete in the $2 million, winner-take-all The Basketball Tournament (“TBT”).
Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, TBT officials are going to hold a 24-team field at one site over 10 days this summer, rather than a previously planned 64-squad event spread across eight regional locations.
Since the annual tourney is shrinking, but demand to enter the TBT is high, a lot of aspiring participants will unfortunately get left out. Such is life.
However, Boeheim’s Army has a track record of deep runs in this tournament, and its 2020 line-up is, plain and simple, absolutely stacked. Greene’s commitment should seal Boeheim’s Army in the upcoming TBT, although frankly it didn’t need further cementing.
With the 6-foot-10 Greene on board, the present Boeheim’s Army roster has four players who got selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. The others are wing Malachi Richardson, center Chris McCullough, and power forward Tyler Lydon.
Additionally, Boeheim’s Army has secured the services of combo guards Eric Devendorf and Brandon Triche, point guard John Gillon, and forward Demetris Nichols.
What former Syracuse basketball sensation Donte Greene delivers to Boeheim’s Army.
Greene is an athletic and long player who can suit up at off-guard, small forward or power forward. He has an excellent shooting touch and brings to Boeheim’s Army a lot of size and scoring prowess.
After donning a ‘Cuse uniform during the 2007-08 campaign, Greene began his professional journey. He spent much of his NBA career with the Sacramento Kings and has also played with numerous franchises in other countries around the globe.
Kevin Belbey, the general manager of Boeheim’s Army, told Donna Ditota of Syracuse.com that Greene is a “professional-level scorer.”
Belbey continued, “There’s a reason why he was a first-round pick, one-and-done. He’s somebody who brings a unique element to what we’re trying to do. He’s so versatile across the board. He can play three different positions for us and I know that when he played with us a few years ago, he was a big reason why we went to the final four. He’s a competitor and he’s willing to play his heart out.”
Putting aside my own bias for my beloved boys in Orange, without question, Boeheim’s Army has to amount to one of the favorites to cut down the nets at this summer’s TBT and collect the colossal cash prize.
