Former Syracuse basketball point guard, John Gillon, will suit up yet again for Boeheim’s Army. The Syraucse alumni team is looking strong for the 2020 TBT.
John Gillon is back! The former Syracuse point guard who had shined on Jim Boeheim court during the 2016-17 season will once again represent Boeheim’s Army in The Basketball Tournament.
The roster addition was announced on the TBT’s twitter page, showing Gillon advancing his team during a prior installment of the summer tournament.
Although they’ve yet to take the crown, The Basketball Tournament has long been dominated by Boeheim’s Army, a Syraucse Orange inspired team looking to bring another trophy to upstate New York. Year after year, they have earned the coveted one-seed to start off the 64-team bracket of mostly college basketball alumni. More often or not, they’ve advanced deep in the tournament, making their name heard.
This year’s team already looks stellar, as John Gillon joins Eric Devendorf, Tyler Lydon, Demetris Nichols, Malachi Richardson, and Brandon Triche as the early roster for SU’s dream team.
Most fans will remember Gillon for his late game heroics to stun Duke in 2017. However, he did just more than that during his lone year in Syracuse, New York. Averaging 10.5 points per game, 5.4 assists, and 1.4 steals, Gillon had a knack for catching fire in a hurry, especially from deep.
During one game in particular against NC State, Gillon erupted for 43 points on 9-for-10 shooting from deep, to go along with nine assists and four rebounds. That type of scoring can be used on any team, but especially for a Boeheim’s Army squad that relies on their guards to always produce.
Gillon also compiled four double-doubles with points and assists during his time at the Cuse, showing that he’s not just a one trick pony. His ability to find teammates, such as Nichols and Lydon, can really create spacing and balance on a lethal team.
Currently, TBT is set to happen this summer, but of course the Covid-19 pandemic could alter at least some of the set schedule. But should Gillon and the rest of the Orange crew be allowed to participate along with the rest of the teams, Boeheim’s Army should be a lock to go far yet again.
