The much anticipated size and placement of the new Carrier Dome scoreboard has been revealed. Simply put, it will tremendously benefit the Syracuse Orange.
Renovations for the Carrier Dome have reportedly gone very smoothly, with the new roof having been recently completed. This means on to the next step, which includes the new state of the art video board. And from what has been said on this monstrosity of a thing, it can only do wonders for the Syracuse Orange – both basketball and football.
According to Syracuse.com, this brand new scoreboard will measure at a whopping 62 1/2-feet wide and 20-feet high on all four sides. In other words, its length will take up over 20 yards of the football field. And while it won’t be on a track as first claimed to move over center court for basketball, part of it will be hung over the court, allowing it to serve as a major upgrade from the current television-style video boards placed around the Dome as of now.
In comparison, the Prudential Center currently holds the largest video board for a college arena, as they serve as the home for the Seton Hall Pirates. That video board was upgraded prior to the 2017-18 basketball season, and according to arenadigest.com, measures as a little over 49-feet wide and 27-feet high, with a smaller board underneath it, bringing the total measurement to roughly 60-feet wide and 38-feet high.
As a soon to be Seton Hall graduate, I cannot say enough of that video board. It has helped serve for tremendous pre-game shows, in-game replays, and has been nothing short of very well received by the Pirate faithful. Simply put, it’s huge, and serves as an advantage during games, while helping as a leverage during recruiting.
For the Syracuse Orange, it is sure to have the same effect. While the Orange have survived for this long without a center hung video board, it will surely serve as an in-game and recruiting advantage as well. All recruits – regardless of sport – are impressed by amenities, such as an impressive locker room, newly renovated weight room, and yes, a very big scoreboard. Upgrades facilities such as this will surely have an impact during recruitment tours, as it shows the willingness of Syracuse Athletics to have the best for their athletes.
Past this, it will also serve as a tremendous experience for the fans. While some of these plans haven’t been announced yet, a center hung video board would most likely have the ability to use on field graphics as a part of a pre-game show, while also serving as a way to immerse fans into the idea of appearing on such a large video board during a basketball or football game.
Currently, the September 19th date versus Colgate football still stands as the first game under the new Dome roof and video board.
