Syracuse basketball has added a talent guard from the transfer portal in Alan Griffin. Here’s why he’s expected to be immediately eligible.
The bleeding has finally stopped for the Syracuse basketball team this offseason.
After losing a slew of guys to the transfer portal (Jalen Carey, Howard Washington, Brycen Goodine) and potentially a guy to the NBA (Elijah Hughes) the Orange have added someone of their own in guard Alan Griffin.
The news was first confirmed by Mike Waters of Syracuse.com.
While typically transfers are forced to sit out a year due to NCAA regulations, Matthew Gutierrez of The Athletic says Griffin is “expected to have immediate eligibility” with the Orange in 2020.
Many people, including Matthew, believe a rule is expected to be passed that’ll allow immediate eligibility for incoming transfers. A vote will take place later this month to make that decision one way or another.
Speaking of eligibility, Alan Griffin still has two years of it remaining on the collegiate level.
Alan Griffin spent the first two years of his college career with Illinois playing in 58 career games. As a freshman, he only played about eight minutes per game, but he exploded last season as a sophomore.
Perhaps his most intriguing trait beyond his measurables (6-foot-5, 195 pounds) is his ability to stroke it from deep at an incredibly efficient rate (shot 41 percent from deep in 2019).
The other thing he has going for him is a rich family history of athletic achievement:
- Griffin’s father (Adrian) is an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors.
- His sister (Aubrey) plays at UConn for one of the best coaches on the planet in Geno Auriemma.
- If that wasn’t enough his brother (AJ Griffin) is a 2021 five-star commit to Duke.
The Orange won this recruiting tussle over other interest from Iowa State, Miami, Arizona, Dayton, and Texas for Alan Griffin’s services.
