Syracuse Basketball: Brycen Goodine quickly joins Providence
Former Syracuse basketball guard Brycen Goodine has already joined a new team in Providence. Here are all the details and how it happened so quickly.
On Friday evening former Syracuse basketball guard Brycen Goodine chose to enter the transfer portal to take his talents to a new team.
Just a few short days later he has already found a new home in Providence.
Goodine spoke with Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal to provide some more details:
"“I was thinking about playing at a local school and my number one local school was Providence. I’ve been on their campus a bunch of times, I like coach (Ed) Cooley and the way he coaches.”"
So why did he leave the Syracuse basketball program?
"Brycen was very clear in his conversation with McNamara, “I enjoyed my time with the Orange and appreciate the coaches but I just didn’t play and I want to play.”"
To his point, he only played in 23 games in 2019-20 and averaged 8.7 minutes per game. Although context is always important in these conversations.
Goodine initially got some opportunities during non-conference play but candidly struggled to transition from high school to the college game. In the midst of his struggles, Brycen ate an elbow for breakfast during practice from Elijah Hughes that broke his nose.
That certainly stunted his growth, development and most importantly his playing time. When Goodine eventually returned to the court he struggled with the face mask and couldn’t see peripherally.
Although Brycen really turned things around late in the season and showed what he’s capable of especially on the defensive end. Goodine hit a game-winning shot vs Wake Forest (the first of his career) and really was on the up-and-up.
Unfortunately, Syracuse fans won’t get to see what the former ESPN top-100 recruit will turn into on the hill. Per Matthew Gutierrez of The Athletic, Goodine had been considering a transfer since the beginning of ACC play in the middle of this past season.
Shortly after Goodine made his decision, a pair of former Orange guards in Jalen Carey and Howard Washington joined him in the transfer portal.
