Former Syracuse basketball star, Michael Carter-Williams is in his seventh NBA season. We take a look at his journey and where he’s playing now.

In 2011 Michael Carter-Williams began his career with the Syracuse basketball team. Before, ‘Cuse MCW played for Saint Andrews high school in Rhode Island. That school happens to be the same place current Syracuse guard, Brycen Goodine, attended before choosing to play for the Orange.

Let’s take a look at MCW’s impact on Syracuse and how his NBA career has gone and his role now.

Freshman year on the Hill, MCW was a fringe role player, only averaging 10 minutes a game. But in year two, his production drastically increased which made him a legitimate pro prospect. In 2013 the Orange made it to the Final Four but eventually lost a close battle.

Let’s take a look at his stats during the team’s impressive season. 2012-13 Carter-Williams, Syracuse stats, per basketball-reference:

  • 11.9 points per game
  • 7.3 assists per game
  • 5 rebounds per game
  • 39 percent from the field

Carter-Williams was the lead facilitator for the Orange and the third leading scorer. After his impactful season, he was selected 11th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Following the draft, Carter-Williams arguably had his best NBA season with outstanding numbers that earned him the Rookie of the Year award. Ever since then, his role has slightly decreased every season until now. While his production may be lower, that doesn’t mean the Orange alum won’t end up earning more minutes.

First, let’s look at his stats this season: 2019-20 Carter-Williams, Magic stats, per basketball-reference:

  • 6.7 points per game
  • 2.5 assists per game
  • 3.4 rebounds per game
  • 42 percent from the field

Lately, he’s been improving his game and relishing the opportunity. On Friday, he secured a season-high 17 points in the team’s victory over Minnesota. The increased playing time is occurring due to the recent injury to Evan Fournier. Fournier’s return is unknown, and there is no set timetable.

However, any period of time provides an opportunity for Carter-Williams to work his way back into the regular rotation. Right now he is averaging 18 minutes a game but expects that to increase in the coming weeks.
