Former Syracuse football head coach Doug Marrone got a 2nd lease on life this week. Here are all the details and what it means for his future.

Despite early reports that former Syracuse football head coach Doug Marrone was going to be fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars, it appears he’s safe after all.

Sources told ESPN’s Dianna Russini that Marrone would be released after the team’s final game. However, the organization quickly refuted the reports:

"“Reports that Doug Marrone will be dismissed after Sunday’s game are 100 percent incorrect,” a spokesman said in the statement. “Owner Shad Khan will meet with his football staff, which includes coaching and personnel, midweek next week” per ESPN."

Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars website reported that Doug Marrone would continue to lead the team in 2020.

So after Marrone’s up and down week of potentially being fired to now being back next year, let’s take a look at his head coaching tenure.

Marrone became the interim head coach in 2016 following the departure of then current head coach, Gus Bradley. Before taking over, he had prior experience as the Buffalo Bills head coach and for the Syracuse football squad.

In just over three full seasons in Jacksonville, the former Orange leader holds a 22-28 record. Marrone’s squad saw their best year in 2017 when they lost 24-20 to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship. That was the Jaguars’ only playoff appearance in the Marrone era.

The Jaguars have experienced highs and lows with coach Marrone, and Jacksonville owner Shad Khan wants more.

Here is a portion of the statement he released via the team’s website:

"“The 2019 season was unacceptable, and I’ve made my dissatisfaction clear. While many unusual circumstances influenced our season, none can fully explain or defend our second-half collapse with first place in the division within reach on Week 9. At the same time, there were positive developments and contributions that should not be overlooked.”"

Doug Marrone was the Syracuse head football coach from 2009-2012, posting a 25-25 record over four seasons, winning the Pinstripe Bowl twice. His career hasn’t always been marked with wins, but coach Marrone is getting the benefit of the doubt in Jacksonville with another year on his contract.

Although the same can’t be said for another former Syracuse football legend. Tom Coughlin was fired back in mid-December for a variety of reasons including:

"“The NFLPA took the unusual step of publicly warning free agents against signing with the Jaguars because of Coughlin’s reported disregard for player rights. According to the NFLPA, over 25 percent of player grievances in the past two seasons had been filed against the Jaguars.”"
