Former Syracuse football star Chris Slayton is drawing serious NFL interest across the league. Here are all the details and what it means for his future.

In Week 17 former Syracuse football stud Chris Slayton made his NFL debut on the active roster for the New York Giants.

It was the first time Slayton was promoted from the team’s practice squad this season. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan revealed the reason why he was activated.

"“The Giants elevated rookie DT Chris Slayton from the practice squad. Placed TE Rhett Ellison on injured reserve. This move was made because there were other teams interested in signing Slayton off the Giants practice squad. He was their seventh-round pick out of Syracuse.”"

During the NFL regular season teams are allowed to hold 53 men on their roster and another 10 players on their practice squad. Once we reach the offseason teams are allowed to increase their rosters back up to 90 men.

When that happens teams usually scour across the league looking for talents to add to the team and apparently there were several teams interested in adding Slayton to their rosters.

It’s a great sign that the New York Giants blocked this from happening because it seems to suggest that they have a great interest in Chris Slayton moving forward.

The 6-foot-4, 307-pound defensive lineman didn’t play in a game in 2019 (he was inactive for the Week 17 game vs the Philadelphia Eagles).

It appears Slayton will be heading for unrestricted free agency this spring. Per Spotrac, when he was drafted in the seventh round (245th overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft Slayton signed a one-year deal for $136,000.

Also on Monday, the Giants announced 10 reserve/future contracts for pending free agents, that list didn’t include Chris Slayton.

Although if there was NFL interest prior to Week 17, there will certainly be interest heading into free agency in March. Despite not playing in any games this season, Chris Slayton has the talent and the traits that’ll intrigue teams this offseason.
