Syracuse Football takes on the Boston College Eagles in their ninth game of the season Saturday afternoon at home. Here’s how you can watch and listen to the game.
Syracuse Football has four games left to right the ship. Following a hard to watch 35-17 loss to Florida State on Saturday, the Orange are now 3-5 on the season. They still have winnable games left, but getting those W’s so far has been a challenge of late.
Coming into the season Syracuse was favored to win most of its games, but now eight weeks in, fans are still wondering how the team could drop off this much. Sure the offensive line has struggled allowing the most sacks in the nation at 42, according to NCAA.com, which has messed up quarterback Tommy DeVito’s rhythm with his receivers, but that can’t be the only thing keeping this team back, can it?
Regardless of the reason, with four games left to turn it around, the Orange needs to figure things out and fast if they even want to make a bowl game, the least of fans’ expectations.
Syracuse did have some bright spots against Florida State. For one, they ran for 192 yards and had zero turnovers, according to ESPN.com. On the flip side though they only passed for 151 yards, allowed another seven sacks, and had 14 penalties totaling 107 yards. Those sacks and penalties kill a team trying to just get consistency and that needs to change for the Orange to get some wins down the stretch.
How do these teams match up?
Total yards per game: Syracuse 367.6 yards, Boston College 454.8 yards
Points per game: Syracuse 23.8, Boston College 31.1
Points Allowed per game: Syracuse 27.3, Boston College 32.0
Yards Allowed per game: Syracuse 427.4 yards, Boston College 487.1 yards
Upon review of the statistics up this point, Syracuse looks like they score less per game and rack up fewer total yards per game overall compared to Boston College. That’s not usually a winning formula. The good news is that Syracuse has given up fewer points per game, and has also allowed fewer yards per game on defense. The numbers are close throughout on all of these though, so this game really looks to be a toss-up.
According to the odds listed on ESPN, Syracuse is currently favored by three points in this game. That margin of victory is not too surprising considering this is a home game, but what is surprising is that they have us predicted to win at all considering the team’s recent lack of success.
Syracuse is one of four teams (out of 65 Power Five conference teams) that they have yet to get a win over a Power Five team, according to Syracuse.com. That list includes Rutgers, Northwestern, and Arkansas. In other words, not great company to be in eight weeks into the season.
Furthermore, there is no game remaining on the schedule that Syracuse is currently favored in other than this game against the Eagles at home. So they best get the ‘W’ eh?
