Syracuse Football takes on the Florida State Seminoles in their eighth game of the season Saturday afternoon on the road. Here’s how you can watch and listen to the game.

Syracuse football failed to get the win they needed last week versus Pittsburgh at home. Now they must turn their focus to a tough and gritty Florida State squad that is not what it was in years past, but is still a very capable and hard team to beat.

In a less than ideal situation, the Orange will play at Florida State’s Doak Campbell Stadium this year, which college football fans know is one of the toughest places to play in the country. The Orange are hoping they can carry some of the momentum they had from last week, even in a loss, into this game, but it won’t be easy. Especially considering we don’t know who will be starting at quarterback: Tommy DeVito or Clayton Welch.

Florida State comes into this game after a close, but disappointing road loss to ACC contender Wake Forest who has only one loss on the season. Before that though, the last three results for the Seminoles were: a blowout loss to Clemson on the road, a blowout win over NC State at home, and a close win over Louisville at home.

Before that, though the Seminoles were just playing lousy football. They lost the season opener to Boise State at home 31-36 in a game they led 31-13 late in the second quarter. After that, they narrowly avoided a huge upset to UL Monroe at home in overtime 45-44 and then lost a close one again to Virginia on the road 31-24 the week after. Since then, Florida State has righted the ship, but like the Orange, they still have a long way to go.

Syracuse played lousy once again last week versus Pitt, and the prospect of a getting to a bowl game is much smaller now. Sure the offensive line is still trash, but the good news is DeVito seems to have found new ways to avoid the pressure and still make good throws without throwing in coverage or costing the team possessions with picks like he did earlier in the season.

We also learned Clayton Welch seems to be a capable backup as well. If the Orange can just get the running game back on track and avoid penalties it would really open up this offense. Whether that’s under DeVito or Welch. The defense, well, they’re just as good as we hoped they’d be and they are currently carrying this team while it figures things out on offense.

How do these teams match up?

Total yards per game: Syracuse 371.1 yards, Florida State 407.0 yards

Points per game: Syracuse 24.7, Florida State 28.6

Points Allowed per game: Syracuse 26.1, Florida State 30.7

Yards Allowed per game: Syracuse 418.9 yards, Florida State 458.7 yards

The good news is that Florida State gives up more yards and allow more points per game, but they also gain more yards and score more points (on average) than Syracuse. That does not sound like a winning formula and will have to change for Syracuse football to win this game.

According to the odds listed on ESPN, Florida State is currently favored by 10 points in this game. That is not surprising considering this is a road game, let alone in Tallahassee. ESPN’s matchup predictor also gives the Orange just a 22.7% chance of winning compared to Florida State’s 77.3%. But hey, who knows? Maybe Syracuse will come in strong and surprise us all. It’s college football, so anything can happen.
