Former Syracuse basketball stud Oshae Brissett has finally shut up all the doubters. Here’s why and what’s next for Brissett in his NBA career.

Oshae Brissett has already hit his first professional milestone since departing the Syracuse basketball program to achieve a life long dream. Brissett has signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors (which was converted from his original Exhibit-10 deal) after going unselected in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Brissett played with the Raptors Summer League team before attending training camp with Toronto.

In the four games, Brissett averaged just slightly over 10 minutes with 3.5 points 2 rebounds on 29 percent shooting and 1-for-5 from three. Brissett returned for training camp after suffering a knee injury while preparing to play with Team Canada in the FIBA World Championship this past summer.

Under a two-way contract, a player can only be assigned to an NBA team for up to 45 days before needing their contract to be converted to an NBA contract. As a result, Brissett will have opportunities to practice and suit up for Tronto this season but will see most of the season with the G-League Raptors 905.

The Raptors 905 play their home games in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; the hometown of Brissett. Brissett will fill one of the two “two-way contracts” for Toronto in 2019-20.

Brissett being able to split time in the NBA and G-League with the same organization is a valuable experience to learn one system. Raptors head coach Nick Nurse is considered as one of the best system coaches in the NBA after just one season since being promoted to begin the 2018 season that ended with an NBA Championship.

Being with the Raptors exclusively will allow one team to focus on Brissett’s development. Nurse and the Raptors also receive high praise — especially for wing players —  after the accent from OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam. Siakam just signed a 4-year max contract as well.

Being home with this coaching staff has been a plus for Brissett and he has noticed that. In a piece by Blake Murphy of The Athletic Brissett raved about the situation:

"“I feel extremely confident and comfortable right now. Coach and the guys here have made basketball easy again, and fun. The culture that we have here and how much everyone wants to play and how much everyone wants to win, that’s what I like. That’s the type of environment I want to be in.”"

There is a growing history of two-way contract success since they implemented the new rule of increasing roster sizes from 15 to 17. Notable Two-Way players who received guaranteed deals in 2018 include Duncan Robinson with the Miami Heat, Danuel House Jr. with the Houston Rockets, and Alex Caruso with the Los Angeles Lakers.
