Syracuse football gets whacked by the Maryland Terrapins in Week 2. Here are all the highlights, lowlights, and what this loss means.

The air was let out of the balloon in Week 2 for the Syracuse football squad. Maryland took the lead with 12:07 on the clock in the first quarter and never gave it back.

It was gut-wrenching. Depressing. And quite frankly embarrassing.

After giving up -4 yards rushing in Week 1 vs a lesser opponent in the Liberty Flames, the doors were blown off the hinges by the lethal Maryland Terrapins rushing attack:

Javon Leake ran the ball just seven times but eclipsed 107 yards and banged in two touchdowns.

Anthony McFarland Jr. carried the rock 14 times for 75 yards and added two more touchdowns.

Tayon Fleet-Davis contributed 11 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Jake Funk piled on some stats late-breaking off a 54-yarder and finished with 94 yards and a touchdown.

All in all, the Terps punished the Orange crush defense to the tune of 354 yards on 45 carries and finished with six touchdowns.

But when you suffer a loss of this magnitude it goes far beyond any single unit. The defense that

many pundits labeled elite played like hot garbage, but they weren’t the only ones.

Tommy DeVito looked shaky Week 1 vs Liberty. Many fans and media members chalked it up to first-game jitters. Despite this technically being DeVito’s third year in the system, he just made his second college football start of the season vs Maryland.

But DeVito just made bad mistakes and it goes beyond turnovers. On several key third and fourth down plays, he simply gave up and walked out of bounds or threw it away. You have to give your players a chance to make a play when you throw it away you eliminate your chances of doing anything.

While Tommy needs to play it safe situationally because he isn’t built like his predecessor Eric Dungey, at some point during the game you have to risk it to get the biscuit. Especially when you’re down 42-13 at the half.

Syracuse simply got punched in the mouth and could never recover. Even second-half adjustments weren’t enough to salvage the lackluster performance.

The Orange couldn’t run the ball and really never seemed to find an offensive identity.

When you lose like this, there isn’t much to be excited about, but we will give a head nod to Trishton Jackson who registered seven receptions for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

At the end of the day you’re never going to win a college football (or any football game) when you lose this badly in these key categories:

  • Maryland finished 11-of-15 on third-down conversions.
  • When you lose the turnover battle and have more penalties (albeit small difference).
  • The Terps only punted three times.
  • On top of the incredible rushing numbers earlier, they averaged 7.9 per carry.
  • Fail the eye test.
    • The Orange looked like they straight up quit at the end of the game, which hardly inspires confidence for how the future.

Syracuse ended up losing 63-20 and up next the road doesn’t get any easier as the Orange return home to play the defending National Champion Clemson Tigers.
