AIRLIE BEACH, AUSTRALIA - APRIL 26: A boat launches a sail in protest to the Adani Carmichael Coal Mine proposal on April 26, 2019 in Airlie Beach, Australia. Former Greens leader and conservationist, Bob Brown, has been leading a convoy of environmental activists through the Southern States towards Central Queensland as part of the #StopAdani movement. With primary concerns for increased coal ship travel through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, unlocking of the Galilee Basin and increase in carbon pollution. The proposed Adani Carmichael Mine, if approved will be constructed in the North Galilee Basin, 160kms north-west of regional town Clermont, its first stage is estimated to produce 27.5 million tonnes of coal per annum and will be transported via rail to Abbot Point which is situated 25km north of Bowen. The Syracuse basketball squad will travel to Italy this summer for some preseason exhibition play. Here are all the juicy details on the trip.

We knew that the Syracuse basketball squad was going on a foreign trip to Italy this Summer. What we didn’t know were all the specifics, but now we do thanks to the official press release.

During their overseas stay the Orange will participate in four exhibition games, here are those details:

  • August 12: vs. Italian Select Team in Vedano Olona.
  • August 14: vs. Italian Select Team in Vincenza.
  • August 17: vs. Italian Select Team in Siena.
  • August 18: vs. Italian Select Team in Rome.

The team will set sail Saturday, August 10 and will return to campus on Tuesday, August 20. Per the press release, the “Italian Select Team” will feature area professional players.

Not only will this provide invaluable game experience for a roster that will have 80 percent turnover next season, but the NCAA also allows 10 additional practice sessions prior to foreign travel.

Dating back to 1961 there have been eight examples in Syracuse history where there has been at least 80 percent change to the starting lineup. We documented here how those teams performed following the change here.

Syracuse has lost Frank Howard, Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett, and Paschal Chukwu to graduation and/or the NBA Draft process. The only returning starter is Elijah Hughes from last season.

Which means a lot of new faces will be gracing the Carrier Dome in 2019 for the Orange:

This will be the first foreign trip for SU since 2013 when they visited Canada. Per the official press release, “the Orange played exhibitions against McGill University, Bishops University, Carleton University, and Ottawa University.”

Why is this significant?

The last time SU went on one of these foreign trips, it led to great success on the basketball court. During the 2013-14 season, following their preseason exhibition in Canada, the Orange went 28-6 overall, 14-4 in the conference, and resulted in one of the best buzzer beater moments in Syracuse history. This was also SU’s first year in the ACC conference.

This trip is being planned and coordinated by the CSM (Complete Sports Management) agency. They’ve helped SU previously in several of their affairs including The Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas a few years ago.

"“CSM is proud to be working with Syracuse University’s men’s basketball team and legendary Hall of Fame Coach Jim Boeheim,” said Lea Miller-Tooley, CSM President via the press release. “We believe their trip to Italy will be a memorable one and play a vital role in their upcoming season.”"

Syracuse fans can only hope that this will end up being a bonding experience for all the new players joining the roster and can result in another deep run in the March Madness tournament.
