Former Syracuse basketball standouts Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett have garnered some serious NBA interest. Here are all the juicy details.
There are still several weeks before the 2019 NBA Draft takes place, but several teams are doing their homework on a few former Syracuse basketball players.
Tyus Battle spent three years on the hill with the Orange before forgoing his senior season to chase his professional dreams.
While his former running mate Oshae Brissett decided two years was enough with the Orange before keeping his name in the 2019 NBA Draft pool.
The latest NBA mock drafts don’t contain the names of either former member of the Orange. Although a former Syracuse commit Darius Bazley finds himself in the backend of the first round per ESPN.
But despite what the “experts” say or predict, it’s all about what the NBA teams think. For instance, VP of Player Personnel Walt Perrin for the Utah Jazz recently shared his thoughts on Oshae Brissett and how he performed in his workout with the team:
"“He moved his feet pretty well today. We got to see him play man-on-man at the NBA Combine. We’ve had a few looks at him playing strictly man-to-man. The thing about Syracuse is if you go out and watch them practice they usually are playing man. Those who play a lot of zone, you kind of have to see them practice because those teams usually play more man in practice. He has shown the ability with his length and ability to move his feet that he could become a pretty good defender.”"
Perrin also commented on Oshae’s offensive game as well:
"“Oshae showed some nice things. The way he can put the ball on the floor and quick pull-ups. He had a very bad year at Syracuse and he’s played extremely well at the NBA Combine, shot extremely well at his pro day, and he shot it pretty well here.”"
Oshae also worked out for the Boston Celtics on Monday per Steve Infanti Sports Director for News Channel 9. The Celtics own four picks currently in the 2019 NBA Draft:
- 14th overall pick.
- 20th overall pick.
- 22nd overall pick.
- 51st overall pick.
Brissett has also worked out for the Philadelphia 76ers, per Keith Pompey. The city of brotherly love holds five selections in this year’s NBA Draft (one in the first round and four more in the second round).
And the other notable team that has worked Brissett out is the Charlotte Hornets. They only hold three selections in the 2019 NBA Draft (one first rounder and two second round picks).
While Tyus Battle worked out for the Atlanta Hawks on Monday. The Hawks hold five draft selections:
- 8th overall pick.
- 10th overall pick.
- 35th overall pick.
- 41st overall pick.
- 42nd overall pick.
The New Orleans Pelicans worked out Battle as well during this offseason process. Not only did

the Pelicans win the NBA Draft lottery (and likely Zion Williamson), they hold two other selections in the draft and could take Battle with either in the second round.
While according to Darren Wolfson Tyus also recently worked out for the Minnesota Timberwolves. They hold two picks (one first and one in the second).
Battle also stood out in a workout with the Utah Jazz. The Jazz has two picks in the draft (one in the first and one in the second) and has shown interest in both Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett during this process.
Walt Perrin, VP of Player Personnel for the Jazz shared some thoughts on Battle via the Salt Lake Tribune:
"“I don’t think he shot the ball extremely well. I know he can shoot a little bit better. Tyus is the type of guy, in more of a five on five situations, that’s able to get shots and to get into the lane. In a three on three, it’s a little tougher sometimes.”"
All in all, the NBA teams that have worked out Battle and Brissett have draft selections that range from the first overall pick to the 57th overall pick. The NBA Draft is Thursday, June 20 on ESPN.
