Syracuse Football: Miami Dolphins have interest in Eric Dungey
Former Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey could be headed to the Miami Dolphins. Here’s the latest and what it could mean for his future.
It’s been a few days since the 2019 NFL Draft concluded and the initial rush of priority free agent signings have been finalized. The big question on Syracuse football fans minds have been, what about Eric Dungey?
Weirdly enough quarterbacks who have had less production and are outright less talented have been signed over ED which has led to some speculation as to why that’s the case?
We did a full column here on Inside the Loud House exploring all of those reasons with some speculation, some NFL sources, and some things Dungey said at the Syracuse Pro Day which you can read here.
But for the first time in this process, we have real action to report on the Eric Dungey front. The Miami Dolphins are seriously interested in adding him to the Rookie Minicamp which takes place from May 10th through the 12th.
This interest was first reported by Barry Jackson who is a 27-year veteran of the Miami Herald:
If a deal is consummated between Eric Dungey and the Miami Dolphins it would be on a “tryout” basis. We explained the difference between an invitation to rookie minicamp and an actual contract here.
But long story short, Dungey would have a three-day opportunity to prove his mettle and if successful would then receive a real contract to be a legitimate part of the Miami Dolphins 90-man roster heading into the Summer and early Fall of their training camp.
Here’s a quick look at what the Miami Dolphins have on the roster at the quarterback position:
- Ryan Fitzpatrick
- A 15-year NFL veteran who was the expected starter before the team acquired Josh Rosen during the 2019 NFL Draft.
- Josh Rosen
- The aforementioned Rosen was a top-10 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He had an up-and-down rookie season and now has a chance to be the Dolphins franchise quarterback.
- Jake Rudock
- Jake is a former sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions. He has spent time on the practice squad and active roster in his first several years in the league. Back in January, he signed a future/reserve contract with the Dolphins.
So long story short, there’s an obvious opportunity for Eric Dungey to carve out a legitimate role here with the Dolphins if they give him a chance. Fitzpatrick isn’t going to be in the league forever and Rudock is a journeyman quarterback. I think Dino Babers said it best, “I can’t imagine two or three other guys beating out Eric Dungey for a spot on an NFL team.” Well if the Dolphins give Dungey a chance, he can prove his coach right.
