Syracuse Mets outfielder Tim Tebow took a shot at the Syracuse football team in his opening presser with the media earlier this week. Here are the details.

Get ready Syracuse: its TEBOW TIME!

Tim Tebow is an outfielder for the Syracuse Mets, the NEW Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Earlier this week he stepped up to the podium for media day and said all the right things, well until of course the Syracuse football team was brought up:

"“Its funny when I was flying in I could think back and remember to when (Donovan) McNabb was here. They played Florida in the 1999 Orange Bowl, it was 31-10, by the way, no big deal. They didn’t score until there were three minutes left in the game. I looked at my fiance and told her isn’t it crazy I can remember a game back from 1999? I remember being so worried about our (Florida) defense vs McNabb. Syracuse is a really good sports town and I love the college atmosphere.”"

Too soon, Tebow, too soon.

But since Tim brought it up, let’s take a quick look back at the 1999 Orange Bowl:

  • “This was the 65th edition of the Orange Bowl and believe it or not, the last one ever played at the Miami Orange Bowl.”
  • The Florida Gators came into the game 9-2:
    • This Gators team was NASTY:
      • Steve Spurrier was the head coach, Doug Johnson at quarterback, and Jevon Kearse “The Freak” on defense.
      • The Gators beat four top-25 teams that season including Syracuse: No. 25 Kentucky, No. 11 LSU, No. 11 Georgia, and No. 18 Syracuse.
  • While the Orange came in at 8-3:
    • This Syracuse team had a lot of stars on it from Dwight Freeney to Keith Bulluck and obviously McNabb on offense. The Orange won three top-25 games that season: No. 13 Michigan, No. 16 Virginia Tech, and No. 19 Miami.
  • Tebow’s memories as an 11-year old were slightly off, Syracuse scored well before “there were three minutes left in the game”. SU scored a field goal in the second quarter to close the gap and make it a 14-3 game.
  • Although with around three minutes left in the game, Syracuse quarterback Donovan McNabb threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Maurice Jackson.
  • Some of the aftermath for both sides:
    • Florida clinched its’ sixth consecutive 10-win season and finished ranked in the top-5 in the country.
    • While Syracuse fell to 8-4 and their star quarterback entered the 1999 NFL Draft and ended up being the second overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wasn’t that a lovely trip down memory lane, thanks again for that Tebow. At the end of the day,k Tim was just having fun with it a little bit and did give a shoutout to the current batch of Orange saying they’re on the right path. While Tebow is on his own path chasing his MLB dream with the Syracuse Mets, just a rock throw away from being in the majors with the New York Mets. We hold no hard feelings Tebow, good luck in your future endeavors!
