Syracuse Football: Who cares if Will Grier isn’t in Camping World Bowl?
West Virginia QB Will Grier won’t play in Camping World Bowl vs the Syracuse football squad. My question is, who freaking cares?
The topic was widely speculated leading up to the Camping World Bowl. Would West Virginia quarterback Will Grier play in Orlando vs the Syracuse football squad?
The answer to that question is a resounding no.
Multiple reports confirmed the news over the weekend that Grier would forgo his bowl appearance to focus on his preparations for the 2019 NFL Draft.
After hearing this news my question to the stratosphere is who freaking cares if he doesn’t play?
I mean seriously, so many Syracuse fans seem upset by the news. For example Chris Carlson of Syracuse.com put out a poll to the fans to see what they thought:
How is this poll nearly 50-50? “Not as fun a game”? Neutral fans care about whether a game is fun, Syracuse fans should be caring about winning this damn game.
Let me make it easy for you, it 100 percent makes 10 wins more easier and that should be most important thing, why would anyone complain about that?
Now don’t get me wrong I certainly would’ve loved to see senior quarterback Eric Dungey in a passing duel vs senior quarterback Will Grier.
How good is Grier? Here are just a few of the stats from this season and his career that are noteworthy:
- In his three year career (had to sit out 2016 due to transfer rules) he put up: 8,556 passing yards, 81:23 touchdown to interception ratio, and a 65 percent completion percentage.
- In every game this season the Mountaineers have scored at least 30 points per game.
- Heading into the 2018 season Will Grier was on several preseason watch lists including: Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and the Davey O’Brien Award. He also finished fourth in the Heisman voting on Saturday.
So he may very well be getting ready for the 2019 NFL Draft, but what really happened is Grier was having nightmares about that Syracuse defensive line consisting of Kendall Coleman, Alton Robinson, and Chris Slayton.
All kidding aside there may be an additional reason why Will isn’t playing on December 28th in Orlando. Grier won’t be the only star player for the Mountaineers skipping out on the bowl game.
Yodny Cajuste, one of three players to be awarded ‘Big 12 offensive linemen of the year’ in 2018, will not play in Orlando as he prepares himself for the 2019 NFL Draft.
But at the end of the day, Syracuse doesn’t control whether these players play or not, so why get all upset by it?
When (not if) Syracuse gets to 10 wins with this news, no one is going to remember that Grier didn’t play in the game and even if they do, I reiterate who cares? Syracuse needs to get to a 10 win season by any way necessary.
