Syracuse Football: Eric Dungey’s Last Game Should be Special
By Josh Peelman
Syracuse Football has been blessed with an amazing quarterback in Eric Dungey these last few years. Inside the Loud House dives into what makes his last game in the Carrier Dome so special.
Syracuse Football landed a heck of a quarterback four years ago when it landed Eric Dungey. A kid nobody seemed to want from Oregon with some serious skills, Dungey brought his fire and passion to this club when it needed it most.
Just as a warning i might get a a little emotional in these words, but bare with me. Eric Dungey is my favorite player, professionally or otherwise in any sport. I have watched Syracuse Football since the first moment I could finally understand what I was seeing in 2003. I have seen our Football squad struggle so much and it has pained me beyond reckoning. But then this kid Dungey shows up and gives me hope that one day he will lead us back to prominence. It took four years, but he finally did and I couldn’t be happier. In fact I am beyond ecstatic.
Seeing this team go 7-2 has been great, heck beyond amazing, after so many losing seasons, but seeing him lead this team despite the critics the way he does makes him truly special. He has been doubted, injured, disappointed and also played beyond our expectations in his time at Syracuse.
I’m not going to bore you with all the stats and laudy numbers and record he has achieved while here with Syracuse Football, but I think we must all remember two games in particular. One was this year in his dominance against NC State. In that game he threw for over 400 yards, per ESPN.com, and beat a nationally ranked team to get the Orange ranked for the first time since I started watching college football.
He won that games despite rumors all week that he would be replaced but star freshman Tommy Devito. Those rumors hurt me a little because I fricken’ love Dungey as a player and admire all he has done for this program over the last few years. Seeing his blow off his critics and play one of the best games of his career was something I cannot even put into words.
The other game I would like to mention I’m sure you all know about: the Clemson game in 2017. In that game Syracuse came in massive underdogs against #2 in the nation Clemson. The Orange and Dungey though showed up from opening kickoff and never let up. His passion and talent won that game for Syracuse and is to this day one of the best, if the greatest victory in Syracuse Football history.
To see Dungey playing his final game at home in the Carrier Dome against Louisville definitely makes me sad. He was incredible in so many ways here at home and for that he will be always be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy of bringing the Orange back to national prominence and that heart and passion for this game can be enough, sometimes, to win football games.
Yeah, he’s got at least three more games in an Orange uniform that he can play after this game if he stays healthy (always a big question mark it seems), but this game has a sense of finality to it. It will be the last time he plays in front of the home fans and gives it all he’s got.
However, it’s also his last moment to shine and leave a last message in our minds of what he has done for this Syracuse Football program. He will want to remind us that he bleeds Orange and that nobody can prove that otherwise.
Eric Dungey may not be the most beloved quarterback in Syracuse History as we have had some great ones. He has had his flaws and occasional bad games, but he’s also human. He is an ordinary guy who made Syracuse Football special again. To think he could be all that and more coming out of high school is mind boggling, but that is where we now stand.
Eric, if you’re reading this just know you what you did for this program will never be forgotten by me and many other Syracuse fans. The legacy you have left, despite what happens against Louisville can never be tarnished. You made a difference here, simple as that. Thank you for always giving everything you’ve got out on that football field. I hope that never changes and I hope someday Syracuse University will honor you for all you’ve done.
In the meantime, let’s take care of Louisville, and finish the season strong. You got one more home game left to add to yo’re amazing legacy here. As for me, there’s no one i’d prefer more running the show.
