2019 is starting to take shape for the Syracuse football squad. Here’s the latest information on a talented prospect on the offensive line.

We all know the Syracuse football squad can use some additional protection in 2019. Well now they have some in Anthony Red.

Red has a big time frame, already standing at 6-foot 4 and weighing 275-pounds, he is at the perfect weight for incoming college lineman.

Once he gets in the Syracuse strength and conditioning program, he will look to add muscle weight, and at 275 he is just light enough where he can do that.

Just hours after attending one of their summer football camps, Anthony Red announced his commitment to the Syracuse football squad. The Connecticut native announced his commitment via twitter:

In addition to his Cuse offer, Red had offers from the likes of Buffalo, Temple, and UMass. According to 247sports, Red is a three star prospect and has a non-composite score of an 84. Red is also listed as the 10th best prospect in the underrated football state that is Connecticut.

It is noteworthy that Red committed just hours after a summer camp on campus. The coaching staff had a first hand ability to see his skill set, and apparently they liked what they saw.

Let’s take a look at the tape from the St. Thomas More lineman out of Bloomfield:

At the :26 mark on the tape, Red is lineup at left tackle, one of the two most important positions on the line along with the center. He fires off the ball quickly, and initiates contact with the defensive player he is assigned to block. Red uses his hands well to drive the defensive player back about five yards, and opens up a hole for the ball carrier to follow.

Perhaps the most impressive play on the tape occurs at the 1:00 mark. Red is at tackle, and he does a good job to not allow his player to get to the quarterback. But that is not the only impressive thing that Red does. The defense is sending a blitz through the gap that Red is responsible for. Not only does he handle his man, but gets a piece of the blitzing linebacker to slow him down on his way to the quarterback, giving his QB time to throw the ball away before he gets hit. That is a high IQ play, and something linemen in the NFL struggle with from time to time.

Wow…

The final play I want to look at occurs at the 1:05 mark. Although Red is a big boy, you can tell he moves well for his size and is agile, which is what this coaching staff looks for in their lineman.

On this play he takes on his blocker, and completely eliminates him from the play, pushing him into the second level, making sure he cannot make a play on the ball carrier. Even though Red didn’t take out any additional defenders in the second level, it’s clear that he has the a good motor and the athleticism to hustle to take out linebackers and safeties.

Red is the second commitment for the Syracuse staff over the past week. He joins Courtney Jackson and Joe Rondi as the three commits in the class of 2019.
