The Syracuse football team continues to do work on the recruiting front. ITLH breaks down the tale of the tape of this talented youngster.

The Syracuse football squad’s coaching staff is beginning to get greedy. They have brought in two solid classes in 2017 and 2018, that they feel have laid the foundation for the program for years to come.

Now, the staff is being selective and only offering kids that they really want to have come in the program. With a shortage on commitments for the 2019 class, the staff has been busy offering 2020, 2021, and even 2022 targets.

One of the more intriguing prospects is 2020 running back Peny Boone, who the Syracuse coaching staff offered earlier in the week. As just a sophomore last season, 247sports ranks Boone as a three star prospect and the 265th best player in his class.

At 6-feet 2 and weighing in around 200-pounds, Boone is already a grown man at the running back position. He does not have to get much bigger than he already is when transferring over to the Division one level.

The Detroit native also has offers from the likes of Boston College, Indiana, Iowa, and Iowa State, but expect more of the blue bloods to get involved here as the 2020 class becomes a priority.

In order to get a commitment from Boone the Orange staff will have to beat out a familiar face that is recruiting Boone, Indiana assistant and former Orange assistant Mike Hart, who is Boone’s primary recruiter for the Hoosiers.

Let’s take a look at the tape:

At the :33 second mark on the tape is when Boone shows off the total package and impresses most at the running back position. He takes the hand-off and immediately looks to bounce it to the outside, but then notices a lane opening up the middle of the field. He plants his left foot into the ground and makes a good decisive cut-back to the middle of the field, breaks a tackle and gets to the outside where he uses his speed to out run everyone to the end zone. I know what you’re thinking, there was some terrible defense being played on that possession, but Boone still showcased an impressive skill set for a sophomore running back.

Boone has really impressive vision and the cutback skills to back up that vision can take him where he wants to go. At the 2:21 mark of the tape, Boone is lined up to the right of the quarterback and he takes and inside hand-off. It is a well blocked play by the linemen, but Boone uses a perfectly timed cutback to hit a hole in the line and get to the next level. Once he is in the second level of the defense, he makes two men miss and then it’s a foot race, which Boone simply is not going to lose at that level of play.

BA-BOOM!

At the 6:37 mark is perhaps my favorite play from this entire highlight tape. Boone takes the handoff to the right side of the screen, and he displays tremendous patience. He waits for a hole to open up and once it does he looks like he is shot out of a cannon as he accelerates down the field and knows how to finish off a run by dragging a few tacklers for a gain of 30 yards.

Boone could be just what the Syracuse coaching staff has been searching for at the running back position. A strong, well-rounded back that would be scary in a spread offense predicated on wearing down opponents defense. Syracuse has one advantage on recruiting Boone that all his potential other suitors don’t, the legend of 44. Bring it back!
