Syracuse Football: Eric Dungey gets disrespected by Athlon Sports

In a recent power rankings of starting quarterbacks, Syracuse football star Eric Dungey didn’t get the ranking he deserved. ITLH breaks it down.

While college football is still months away from action, there has been a lot of hoopla with rankings and opinions.

One opinion in particular from Athlon Sports on Syracuse football star Eric Dungey has really grinded some gears.

For those who missed the piece, Athlon Sports decided to rank all of the starting quarterbacks in college football from No. 1 to No. 130. A lot of hard work was put into it, which I can respect, but the rating for Eric Dungey seemed a bit disrespectful by Steve Lassan of Athlon Sports:

"23. Eric Dungey, Syracuse“Syracuse has to retool its receiving corps after the departures of Steve Ishmael and Ervin Phillips, but the path to a bowl game hinges on keeping Dungey healthy. The Oregon native has missed the final three contests in each of the last three years due to injury. When healthy, Dungey is among the ACC’s top quarterbacks. In nine appearances last season, he threw for 2,495 yards and 14 scores and rushed for 595 yards and nine touchdowns. If Dungey is limited at any point in 2018, Syracuse will turn to intriguing redshirt freshman Tommy DeVito – a four-star recruit in the 2017 signing class.”"

Why only 23rd?

That’s the confusing part of all of this. I know some Syracuse fans were happy with the ranking, but let’s not settle here. When healthy he’s one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC, in these rankings he’s the fourth best quarterback out of the ACC.

The reason why this ranking infuriates me is because of some of the players who are rated above him. Like Tua Tagovailoa rated as the second best quarterback in all of college football? Give me a break.

The connection between Tua and Dungey is simple, the rationale for their rankings. The narrative what Tua did in one half of the National Championship can be projected to an entire season is ludicrous.

That’s like me ranking Dungey No. 1 and saying ‘if Dungey stays healthy and has a Heisman season this is where he’d be ranked.’ But again at the end of the day these are just arbitrary opinions. What truly matters is mentioned there in the quote above, Dungey’s health.

If this season is truly bowl or bust for the Orange in 2018, it will ride or die with Dungey. If he’s healthy he should lead the Orange to a bowl game and if he’s not there’s no realism in expecting Tommy DeVito to pick up where he left off.

Also even beyond this individual season, this is about Dungey’s legacy. We recently ranked the top 10 SU quarterbacks of all time and Dungey’s spot on that list could sky rocket or floor based on what happens. But one way or another his legacy will be defined by his senior season, for better or for worse.
