The Syracuse football team continues to do work for 2019. Specifically at quarterback and the team has made the top-5 for an elite prospect.

The 2019 recruiting cycle has been a relatively quiet one for Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers and his coaching staff. It is rare to see a team not have its’ first commit by mid-April, but that is currently where Syracuse sits. However, the staff did get some good news about a big time 2019 QB.

Sam Johnson III announced on Saturday that the Orange are in his final five of schools he is looking at. Most recruiting sites have Johnson listed as a three star prospect, and 247sports rated him an 85. He is nationally rated as the 680th best quarterback. The Walled Lake, Michigan native checks in at 6-foot 3 and weighs 190-pounds.

Also included in Johnson’s top five, were Boston College, Missouri, Michigan, and Iowa. Syracuse will be battling with some serious competition for Johnson, but getting a quarterback to start off a 2019 would be nice for the Orange.

He announced his top five via twitter:

This is one of those recruiting battles that are key for Babers and his staff to win if they want to become a presence nationally. A highly-touted, athletic game changing quarterback is the perfect fit for Syracuse’s up tempo offense.

Last season, Johnson boasted a completion percentage of 58.7%, 2115 yards thrown for, and a touchdown to interception ration of 23 to 5. On the ground, he accumulated 65 rushing attempts for 263 yards and five TD’s.

Johnson is definitely a capable passer, his rushing numbers aren’t tremendous and he didn’t set the world on fire, but he if he can make the defense respect his legs, that is just another thing to worry about.

Check out his highlights:

After this season, Syracuse will lose Eric Dungey to graduation, and then all eyes are on heir apparent, Tommy DeVito, to step up and take over in his redshirt sophomore campaign. In addition to DeVito, Syracuse will have Rex Culpepper, and Chance Amie. It is imperative that Syracuse finds more quarterbacks for that season to build for the future.

Based off of his mid-season highlights from the 2017-2018 season, Johnson looks to be a very stout pocket passer, displaying good patience and elusiveness. He also showcases the ability to run the read option with effectiveness. On the goal line this is a valuable tactic, and we have seen Eric Dungey have a ton of success in his career at Syracuse running the ball for TD’s.
