Jim Boeheim

I know, I know. If the only metric for ‘Person of the Year’ was how influential the person is in the news stories, Jim Boeheim would win every year in Syracuse. But Jimmy lands on the list because Hopkins’ departure clarified what we already knew about Boeheim and his impending retirement – he will do so when he is good and ready to.

The hall of fame coach is always at the height of media scrutiny/praise, even in the offseason. If anything important involving Syracuse Athletics occurs, you better believe there will be a quote from Jim Boeheim prominently displayed throughout the various forms of media. Boeheim may claim to never read blog posts or news articles about him, but they come up in the media almost daily so it would be very difficult to ignore.

The decision to give Boeheim a contract extension was met with praise in Syracuse, but mixed reactions from around the country. From Pete Thamel:

"“The move to keep Boeheim around shouldn’t be surprising, as the school capitulated to fan pressure and an unspoken acknowledgement that filling the Carrier Dome is more important that academic integrity and following the rules. The replacement situation proved so tenuous that Hopkins found a soft landing elsewhere. “Here’s what happens in all these coach-in-waiting deals,” said another source familiar with the situation. “The coach resents the fact someone is sitting there to take his job. It’s human nature.”"

Jim Boeheim will always get 100 different reactions out of 100 different people.
