Syracuse Football: Top 5 Plays of Week 4 Versus LSU (video highlights)

4. Devin C. Butler to Erv Philips Trick Play
Syracuse was struggling to score in the first half and it looked like the Orange may get blown out at LSU even though their defensive line was doing just fine. However, this play changed that for the Orange, giving Syracuse their first touchdown of the game.
As with many plays I have written about in these highlights, the Orange were set up in the shotgun with the running back to Dungey’s right. On his left was a the wide receiver Devin C Butler running towards the middle of the play.
Dungey hiked the ball and immediately handed it to the receiver Butler who looked like he was going to do a jet sweep run around the line. However, the play either got broken up or confused after the handoff because Butler immediately faced pressure from LSU defensive line.
As a result, Butler did a spin move, designed or not, and ran the other direction. That run to the left side of the field behind the line of scrimmage created room to either run or pass.
Once open on the left side, Butler threw a pass on the run down the field. Down there was Dungey who had run a receiver route and Erv Philips. The pass though went to Philips who corralled it in the end zone for the touchdown.
It was an incredible play and a necessary one as the Orange were down 21-3 prior to the score and desperately needed a touchdown and some momentum. That score on the trick play to Philips was huge and got the Orange back into the game. Not to mention, it was also incredibly fun to watch.
