5. Ravian Pierce Catch Above Defender for Score

This play sort of reminded me of the David  Tyree catch when the Giants took down the New England Patriots in Superbowl XLII. It wasn’t in as big a spot or on a helmet or anything special, it just had that kind of crazy-catch feeling to it.

On the play, Dungey faked the handoff to the running back, which he does so well. Meanwhile the Tight end Ravian Pierce went into the end zone and looked back for the throw. The defender guarding Pierce never had a chance to turn around as Dungey threw the ball quickly in Pierce’s direction.

He knew a pass was coming though as Pierce had stopped in his tracks and was jumping up to receive the ball for the score. The defender tried to get his hands up in time but didn’t make it.

Pierce proceeded to reach out his hands over the receivers head and bring the ball back to his chest. He used the defenders body and maybe his helmet to help maintain possession of the ball. It was one of those plays you had to see again after it happened because you couldn’t believe he had actually brought in the catch.

Its not often receivers have to reach that far over a defenders head as they defend you to reel in the pass. However, on this play that’s how it went down. It was an amazing catch, and one of many for the Syracuse Football team in this game.
