Kyrie Irving Wants To Play For New York Knicks ‘Very Badly’, Will It Matter?
Reports have surfaced that Kyrie Irving ‘very badly’ wants to play for the New York Knicks. But in the end will it matter? We discuss.
One of the top trending topics on Twitter has been this Kyrie Irving story. For those who don’t know and have been living under a rock, here’s the quick synopsis:
- The Cleveland Cavaliers lose the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors in embarrassing fashion.
- The Cavaliers do little to nothing during the offseason to seriously change the dynamic of the team.
- Kyrie Irving is visibly frustrated that the Cavaliers are “built around LeBron James”. Especially when you consider LeBron James could leave after this season and has indicated that (more on that later).
- Kyrie surprises the NBA world by requesting a trade from the Cavaliers, a team that just two years ago he brought their first world championship.
So that’s the gist for everyone. A lot of people have openly criticized Irving for trying to get out of a situation in which he’s been to three straight NBA Finals. Although I see the writing on the wall, as does Irving, LeBron could leave the Cavs high and dry and leave Irving in a terrible situation.
We all saw what happened to Paul George with just one-year remaining on his deal. There were

less teams interested in investing in a one-year rental. Irving is a unique situation in which he has at a minimum two years on the books. While on top of that he has a player option that is a near lock that he is going to decline.
So what now?
So I’m all for Irving requesting a trade and instead of waiting to get left high and dry by LeBron, he leaves on his own accord essentially. But he gave the team a list of destinations including the New York Knicks.
Apparently according to reports he ‘very badly’ wants to join them by any means necessary.
But will his list of possible love connections matter?
After speaking with a few insiders, the list makes a little more sense to me. Ultimately a lot of teams will be interested in a two-year Irving, others want him long term. So if those are the teams Kyrie wants to go too, it would behoove the Cavs and the potential trade partner to make it happen.
Unfortunately for Irving the Knicks don’t have a whole lot to offer outside of Kristaps Porzingis, who according to sources is not on the table. So the Knicks most likely would have to offer a package that includes multiple first round picks and new arrival Frank Ntilikina.
The Cavaliers would probably bite at this deal.

Just imagine. The Knicks could go from nearly imploding with Phil Jackson at the helm to potentially having a new dynamic duo to build around in KP and Irving. It would be a dramatic turnaround for the franchise that has been in dire straights.
