Dino Babers and the Syracuse Football staff have been hard at work developing the 2018 recruiting class. Inside the Loud House looks at the latest big recruit the Orange have added.

Tyrone Sampson, a consensus four star recruit and the 265th best recruit in the country according to Scout.com, has committed to Syracuse Football. The second best center in 2018 announced his commitment to Syracuse via twitter:

Sampson was on an official visit at Syracuse’s campus today when he informed Head Coach Dino Babers and the Syracuse Football coaching staff that he would be committing. The Detroit native, also held offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Minnesota, among others. Sampson is a rising prospect and was likely to pick up more offers from major Big Ten schools. Sampson’s frame is still growing, but currently he is listed at 6’3, weighing in at 305 pounds.

Strength and Versatility

Right from the beginning of the tape, you can see this big man’s strength and versatility. In the first two plays of the highlight tape, he fires off the ball quickly, and finds the man he is responsible to block. In the first one, he quickly gets to the second level and puts a pancake block on a linebacker. In the second play on the highlight tape, Sampson has a defensive lineman lined up in front of him. This time, he pancakes the defensive lineman. He is a man out there amongst boys.

Pulling

More from football recruiting

The next play that really stood out to me occurs at the 1:30 mark. Sampson is once again lined up at center. The offense has a run play called, and Sampson is going to be pulling to get out in front of the running back. He fires off the ball and gets out to the second level showing off nice speed as an offensive lineman. Many of the recruiting sites list Sampson primarily as a center, but he also can play guard. Seeing a guy get off the ball and pull is a skill that guards must have at the next level.

Pass Blocking

At the 1:38 mark, Sampson shows off his pass blocking. This is a skill, that we all know, a Syracuse lineman must have. Baber’s high-flying offense passes the ball a lot. Sampson will need to stand strong against ACC interior defensive linemen to protect guys like Tommy DeVito, in the future.

Offensive/Defensive Player

The last play I want to look at occurs at the 3:14 mark. Sampson projects as an offensive player, but in this clip he is playing upfront on defense. Sampson shows just how quick he gets off the ball in this clip. He fires off the snap, quickly and doesn’t allow the pulling guard to get set to block him. Sampson shoves the guard out of his way and tackles the running back in the backfield for a loss.

Welcome to Syracuse Football Tyrone!
