Tommy DeVito Speaks About Commitment To The Syracuse Football Program

One of the most highly touted prospects the Syracuse football team was after made it official on ESPN2 on National Signing Day that he was headed to CNY.

We had over 20 recruits join the Syracuse football program throughout the day on Wednesday. We tracked it all since this morning and if you’d like to review any signing or see their highlights you can do so via our Official Recruiting Tracker.

But none perhaps more important than Tommy DeVito the 6-foot-2, 202-pound Don Bosco (Ramsey, N.J.) Preparatory School senior signed the dotted line on NSD. He appeared on ESPN2 at 1:35 PM to talk about his decision to stick with Syracuse.

In college football although the “franchise quarterback” tag isn’t what it is in the NFL, it’s still the most important position in football. When asked how he fits with the team he had this to say via ESPN2’s interview:

"“I can help this team win games. I can be the leader I need to be at the quarterback position.”"

He also answered the question about signing on so early to the SU football program and what drove him to do so.

"“Coach Babers sold me on the offense, the education also played a huge role. Plus I can take internships in the best city in the world (New York City). To have that on the resume is truly something special.”"

just assimilate himself to the playbook. But he was also asked about his experience attending Syracuse football games this year, in-particular the Virginia Tech game. “The Kumbaya moment” was captured and DeVito got a chance to breathe it all in and it had a tremendous impact on him.

"“That was awesome, first off the game was tremendous. They were predicted to lose and they pulled out the win and the locker room atmosphere was just amazing.”"

Perhaps one of the biggest things is that everyone has been assuming that DeVito will redshirt this year and get acclimated to the offense. But don’t include DeVito among those who say he’s not playing a down this year.

"“I’m not planning on redshirting. As far as moving forward, now that I’ve signed, me and coach Lewis (offensive coordinator) plan on Facetiming or whatever two times a week to help me. I move in May 25th, so I want to be as prepared as possible heading in.”"

DeVito was not a well known Jersey kid when Syracuse came calling. But eventually national recognition increased exponentially and DeVito was featured in: the Under Armor game, Elite 11, etc. He addressed the attention he received during those processes:

"“It all started with the Elite 11 camp and some people say I ‘blew up’ from there. So inevitably a lot of schools reached out at that point. But that hasn’t really meant anything to me, I wanted to stick with Syracuse because they were with me since day one.”"

It’s funny how much a few years can change the narrative. SU has been in the basement for a long time and now it finally looks like things are changing. They have a charismatic coach, a future at the quarterback position, and hopefully a ton more bowl games.
