Moving forward, Syracuse football and its peers will operate with one transfer portal window instead of two.

On Tuesday, the NCAA Division I Administrative Committee approved the dates for college football's one-time-only transfer portal. It will run for 15 days, from January 2 to January 16. Previously, there were two transfer portal windows, one in the winter and a second one in the spring.

According to a post on X from the NCAA, the committee’s action on the one-time-only transfer portal will not be officially final until its meeting concludes on Wednesday.

Last month, the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee had recommended dates for this transfer portal window that would last from January 2 to January 11. However, after getting feedback from athletes, the Division I Administrative Committee asked the oversight committee to further discuss the length of the new portal window.

For athletes who compete for teams that are in the College Football Playoff, they would have five days after their squad's final postseason game to enter the transfer portal.

Just as a point of context, in this season's 12-team CFP, the semifinal round is on January 8 and January 9, while the national championship game is on January 19.

Syracuse football and other schools must adjust to having just one transfer portal window.

Also on Tuesday, the Division I Administrative Committee approved a proposal for the transfer portal window exception when a head coaching change occurs. Effective immediately, when there is a head coaching change, athletes will have 15 days to enter the portal, as compared to 30 days in the past.

Additionally, athletes must wait five days after a new head coach is hired or announced to enter the portal. Players whose head coaches have already departed are grandfathered in under prior rules, according to the NCAA.

In recent years, as the NCAA allowed athletes to freely transfer without having to sit out a season, the portal has exploded. Plus, there is third-party NIL and direct revenue-sharing these days, making transfer portal recruiting extremely important to the Syracuse football staff and its peers across the country.

Going to a single transfer portal window isn't a perfect solution, however, having a window after the bowl season wraps up, and the majority of the CFP contests are played, is logical.
