Former Syracuse basketball star Oshae Brissett, who had a really nice 2021-22 season for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, has committed to suit up for Team Canada’s summer group that is seeking to qualify for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, according to an announcement.

The 6-foot-7 small forward, who played two seasons with the Orange, is one of 14 players within the NBA, NCAA and international leagues who have agreed to a three-year commitment to represent Canada’s senior men’s national team from now until the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, per the release from Team Canada.

Brissett, who grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, and the other 13 players who are part of this summer core are “complementary to the winter core roster, who previously played for Canada during the opening two windows” of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers in November and February.

The senior men’s FIBA competitions for Team Canada will consist of “core players from both the summer and winter pools to ultimately give the program the best chance to qualify for the upcoming World Cup and Olympics,” the announcement says.

Next year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup will transpire from August 25 to September 10. The group portion of the event will occur in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, while the cup’s final phase will be held in the Philippines’ capital city of Manila.

Nick Nurse, the head coach of the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, will serve as the head coach of Team Canada’s senior men’s national squad.

For the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers, Team Canada is in Group C and will play the Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Bahamas, according to the press release.

At present, Team Canada checks in at No. 18 in the FIBA World Rankings.

In the 2017-18 and 2018-19 terms for the ‘Cuse, Brissett compiled averages of 13.7 points and 8.2 boards per game. Syracuse basketball went to the Sweet 16 in the 2018 NCAA Tournament and lost in the round of 64 during the 2019 Big Dance.

During the 2021-22 campaign for the Pacers, per his bio on ESPN, Oshae Brissett appeared in 67 games, logging averages of 23.3 minutes, 9.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per affair, while connecting on 41.1 percent from the field, 35.0 percent from beyond the arc and 69.5 percent from the free-throw line.
