Syracuse basketball is heavily involved in the recruitment of 2022 five-star power forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, but now the Orange is in the mix for four-star Maliq Brown, who also suits up at power forward in this cycle.

The ‘Cuse recently offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-9 Brown, according to his Twitter page. Brown is a junior at the Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va.

According to a review of various recruiting services, Brown’s other offers include from Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Penn State, TCU, VCU, Richmond, Old Dominion and Murray State. Per his bio on the 247Sports Web site, Brown also holds interest from a flood of additional high-major groups.

The 247Sports Composite rates Brown as four stars, while he is three stars, according to 247Sports and Rivals.com.

Nationally in the 2022 class, Brown is ranked No. 105 from the 247Sports Composite, as well as No. 20 at power forward and No. 6 in Virginia. The 247Sports recruiting service places him at No. 126 overall, No. 26 at power forward and No. 7 in Virginia. Finally, Rivals.com slots Brown at No. 142 in this cycle.

Syracuse basketball is going after 2022 four-star power forward Maliq Brown.

Brown and Orange 2022 high-priority target Justin Taylor, a four-star wing, have competed together on the AAU circuit and have a “close” relationship, Taylor said in an article by Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI.

Regarding Brown, Taylor said to McAllister, “We played for the same AAU team for a couple years and are close. I talked to coach G-Mac [Gerry McNamara] about him and they obviously love his game. He’s super athletic, long, versatile and has got a huge upside.”

McAllister provided some insight as it pertains to the ‘Cuse coaching staff pursuing power forwards Brown and Huntley-Hatfield, the latter of whom is a top-10 prospect in this class, according to several recruiting services.

“The offer for Brown is not related to the recruitment of Huntley-Hatfield as the two are viewed as different types of players that could play together should they both choose Syracuse,” McAllister said.

We’ll obviously continue to keep close tabs on the Syracuse basketball recruiting of Huntley-Hatfield and new 2022 target Brown.
