Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers gave some surprising injury news during his media appearance. Here are all the details.
There was a lot of optimism following the Week 5 Holy Cross game that a lot of injured Syracuse football players would be ready for prime time vs NC State.
Dino Babers shut all of that down during his media appearance on Monday:
“No changes in our injuries at all. We’re still waiting to see if we can get some guys back. That happens in football and we need to play with the guys that we have. It’s the next man up mentality.”
“Not going to talk about any of those guys. I wouldn’t bet on those guys playing, the injury report is going to stay the same.”
Finally, he was asked one additional question on starting center Sam Heckel who has been out since the season opener vs Liberty:
“You’ll have to talk to the medical people. I’m not going to talk about his business.”
The only positive nugget we received from coach Babers was on Tommy DeVito who said that he will start on Thursday night vs NC State on the road.
This is totally surprising news from the head coach ahead of the brunt of the ACC schedule. Prior to the bye, Dino Babers seemed a lot more optimistic that the additional rest would be enough to get a lot of these guys back.
For all those counting at home with Andre Cisco and Ifeatu Melifonwu unlikely to suit up, that would be the third straight game missed by both players. Sam Heckel is on pace to miss his fifth straight game after being injured during the season opener. While finally, McKinley Williams has yet to suit up this season for the Orange (thus he’s expected to miss his sixth straight game).
It’s unclear what happened during the bye week to flip the narrative on the injured players returning but nonetheless having DeVito ready for this game is huge.
