Syracuse Football: Top Super Bowl superlatives for the Orange

*Cracks knuckles* time to run through the 28 players who have won a Super Bowl and 24 who have won a Super Bowl championship with Syracuse ties (this list does not include players who were on the practice squad or on injured reserve):

John Mackey, TE

  • Appeared in two Super Bowls:
    • Super Bowl 3: losing to the New York Jets 16-7 as a member of the Baltimore Colts.
    • Super Bowl 5: winning 16-13 over the Dallas Cowboys.
  • Played for the Orange from 1960-62.

Larry Csonka, RB

  • Appeared in three (straight) Super Bowls:
    • Super Bowl 6: Dallas Cowboys won 24-3 over the Miami Dolphins
    • Super Bowl 7: Dolphins won 14-7 over the Washington Redskins (capping off the only undefeated season in NFL History).
    • Super Bowl 8: Dolphins won their second straight Super Bowl title 24-7 over the Minnesota Vikings. Csonka holds the honor of being the only Syracuse football player to ever win Super Bowl MVP honors (which he accomplished in Super Bowl 8).
  • Played for the Orange from 1965-67.

Keith Moody, DB

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 15: the Oakland Raiders won 27-10 over the Philadelphia Eagles.
  • Drafted in the 10th round of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.

Two other players also played in Super Bowl 15, but they were on the losing side of things with the Eagles:

  • Ken Clarke (played 14 seasons in the NFL and played defensive tackle at Syracuse) and Stan Walters (drafted in the ninth round of the 1972 NFL Draft and played on the offensive line at Syracuse).

Dave Lapham, OL

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 16: The San Francisco 49ers won 26-21 over the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • A versatile piece that played every position on the offensive line and was a third round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1974 NFL Draft.

Art Monk, WR

  • Appeared in four Super Bowls:
    • Super Bowl 17: Washington Redskins won 27-17 over the Miami Dolphins.
    • Super Bowl 18: Los Angeles Raiders won 38-9 over the Redskins.
    • Super Bowl 22: Redskins beat the Denver Broncos 42-10.
    • Super Bowl 26: Redskins won 37-24 over the Buffalo Bills.
  • Monk has three world championships, is a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and was the 18th overall pick in the 1980 NFL Draft.

Mike Charles “The Beast from the East”, NT

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 19: San Francisco 49ers won 38-16 over the Miami Dolphins.
  • Drafted in the second round (55th overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft.

Joe Morris, RB

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 21: New York Giants won 39-20 over the Denver Broncos.
  • Morris is the all-time leading rusher in Syracuse history and was drafted in the second round (ironically 45th overall, which is the same jersey number he wore at Syracuse) of the 1982 NFL Draft.

Pat Kelly, TE

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 24: San Francisco 49ers won 55-10 over the Denver Broncos.
  • Pat was drafted in the seventh round (174th overall) of the 1988 NFL Draft. Kelly died of cancer back in 2003.

Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston, FB

  • Appeared in three Super Bowls:
    • Super Bowl 27: Dallas Cowboys won 52-17 over the Buffalo Bills.
    • Super Bowl 28: Dallas Cowboys won 30-13 over the Bills.
    • Super Bowl 30: Cowboys won 27-17 over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  • Moose was a member of the undefeated 1987 Syracuse football team and was drafted 39th overall in the second round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

Kevin Mitchell, LB

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • San Francisco 49ers won 49-26 over the San Diego Chargers.
  • Mitchell won his first and only Super Bowl in his rookie season. He was drafted with the 53rd overall pick (second round) of the 1994 NFL Draft.

Dave Wohlabaugh, C

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    •  Super Bowl 31: Green Bay Packers won 35-21 over the New England Patriots.
  • Wohlabaugh was widely considered one of the best centers in the NFL when he was playing. He was a fourth round pick (112th overall) in the 1995 NFL Draft out of Syracuse.

Paul Frase, DL

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 32: Denver Broncos won 31-24 over the Green Bay Packers.
  • Frase was a sixth round draft selection (146th overall) in the 1988 NFL Draft.

Melvin Tuten, OL

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 33: Denver Broncos won 34-19 over the Atlanta Falcons.
  • Actually played tight end during his time at Syracuse before being drafted in the third round (69th overall) of the 1995 NFL Draft.

Roland Williams, TE

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl (technically two but he was on injured reserve and didn’t participate in Super Bowl 37 with the Oakland Raiders):
    • Super Bowl 34: St. Louis Rams won 23-16 over the Tennessee Titans.
  • Roland was a part of the “Greatest Show on Turf” squad. He was drafted in the fourth round (98th overall) in the 1998 NFL Draft.

Rob Burnett (DL), Qadry Ismail (WR)

  • Both appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 35: Baltimore Ravens won 34-7 over the New York Giants.
  • Burnett finished with 73 career sacks and was a 5th round pick (129th overall) in the 1990 NFL Draft. While Qadry “The Missile” Ismail had a career that saw him eclipse over 5,000 career receiving yards. Ismail was the 52nd overall pick (second round) in the 1993 NFL Draft.

TeBucky Jones, DB

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 36: New England Patriots won 20-17 over the St. Louis Rams.
  • Jones had one of the biggest plays that never actually happened in the Super Bowl when he scooped-and-scored on a 97 yard take back, but the play was called back on a holding penalty. Jones was the 22nd overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft.

Donovan McNabb, QB

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 39: New England Patriots won 24-21 over the Philadelphia Eagles.
  • McNabb appeared in five NFC Championship games and is the most decorated Syracuse quarterback in history. McNabb was the second overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft.

Dwight Freeney, DE/OLB, Marvin Harrison, WR

  • Freeney (appeared in two) and Harrison only appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 41: Indianapolis Colts won 29-17 over the Chicago Bears.
    • Super Bowl 51: New England Patriots 34-28 over the Atlanta Falcons (Freeney lost).
  • Two Pro Football Hall of Famers (Harrison is already in and Freeney will be first ballot when he is eligible).
  • Ryan LaCasee and Josh Thomas were also on that Colts team that won the Super Bowl. Reserve running back James Mungro was on injured reserve for Colts.

David Tyree, WR

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 42: New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 17-14
  • Many argue Tyree’s play was the greatest in Super Bowl history. Tyree started as a sixth round pick (211th overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft.

Anthony Smith, S

  • Appeared in two Super Bowls:
    • Super Bowl 43: Pittsburgh Steelers won 27-23 over the Arizona Cardinals.
    • Super Bowl 45: Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25.
  • Smith was a third round (83rd overall) selection in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Arthur Jones, DL

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 47: Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.
  • Arthur Jones ended up being a fifth round draft selection (157th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Chandler Jones, DL/OLB

  • Appeared in one Super Bowl:
    • Super Bowl 49: New England Patriots defeat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24.
  • The only Syracuse football player to have won a Super Bowl. Chandler Jones is on pace for a Pro Football Hall of Fame type career in the NFL.
