Syracuse Football: Predicting the Orange’s 2018 record
By Adam Patrick
Final 2018 Record: 6-6
Big Win: Week 11 vs. Notre Dame (at Yankee Stadium)
This is the season for Dino Babers and his staff. It is likely the most talented roster that Babers and his staff have had during their time on the hill.
This season, Syracuse has a senior quarterback in Eric Dungey and the most experienced roster since Ryan Nassib’s senior year in 2012.
The defense returns eight starters, which would make one think there are very few questions there. But after graduating all three starting linebackers, that position group is a big question mark in 2018.
Earlier in this year’s camp, it had been reported that the Orange were shifting their defensive scheme to a 4-2-5 alignment, which it still may use a lot this season. Electing to go with an extra defensive back instead of the traditional three linebackers would seem to indicate a lack of confidence in the linebacking unit.
But since then, the depth chart has been released with a more traditional 4-3-4 formation. The secondary should be much improved with a healthy Antwan Cordy, both starting corners from 2017 returning, and safety Evan Foster returning as well.
The offense will be paced by seniors Dungey, Dontae Strickland, and Ravian Pierce. With a much more experienced offensive line, highlighted by Texas A&M graduate transfer Koda Martin, look for Syracuse’s running game to be improved under new offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh.
Wide receiver is the biggest question mark for position groups on the offensive side of the ball for the Orange this year, but it could also have the most talent. The youth movement at wide receiver is in full affect, but Syracuse hasn’t really found their “go-to” guy yet. Is it Devin Butler? Is it Jamal Custis?
Tight end Ravian Pierce will likely have a big season in 2018, but playmakers on the outside of the offense is still a question mark. The Orange will need to find some consistency there and if they do, they can have a nice season.
