have the weight or physicality in game hurts his ability to contribute in a huge way. However, if he doesn’t need to be a physical runner he can make a catch and turn into a huge gain. That is exactly what happened on this play.
On their own 27 yard line, Dungey in the I-formation and a 3 wide-set, with two to his left. Neal, was positioned to do a post route. Dungey took the snap and want back a couple steps because the offensive line got pushed back and was pressuring him. He looked to the far left sideline to see Neal breaking away from his defender on the outside.
Dungey heaves the ball downfield as Neal just as Neal gets by his man. The running back catches the ball which went over the defenders head around the 50 yard line. From there, Neal does what he does best, he uses jukes, hesitation and speed to lead to yards after the catch rather than physicality. The result: and extra 25 yards after the catch.
Neal would end up being tackled close to the 25 yard line of NC States. That play was good enough for a 47 yard gain. This play set the Orange. Unfortunately, the Orange would not score on the possession.
