Jim Boeheim: A Look Back at 999 Syracuse Wins

Lets take a look back at the illustrious history of Jim Boeheim’s 999 wins prior to his winning No. 1000 against Virginia.
Jim Boeheim has been the Head Coach of Syracuse Basketball since 1976. That is a total of 41 years at the helm. In his first four years before the Carrier Dome was erected he had a 100-18 record as Head Coach. That’s a winning percentage of 82 percent! of In terms of overall record before Saturday’s game he sits at 1001-351 (even though the NCAA says otherwise). Inside the Loud House’s Neil Adler talked more those vacated wins in his open letter to Jim Boeheim. Overlooking those NCAA vacated wins, Jim Boeheim has 36 total 20-win seasons out of 41 he’s coached.
Dome Records
In the Carrier Dome, Boeheim can truly say “Dome, Sweet, Dome” because according to Cuse.com, Syracuse Basketball has a record of 280-57. That’s a winning percentage of 80 percent! This year Syracuse is 14-2 at the Dome, just to compare.
If you take out the 9 games Boeheim did not coach due to NCAA sanctions, he has a 276-56 record in the Carrier Dome. (Mike Hopkins went 4-1 in the Dome as Head Coach Interim during the 2015-2016 season)
He also coached both Duke-Syracuse games when Syracuse set the NCAA Men’s Basketball record for on-campus attendance with 35,446.
Record versus Ranked Teams
Against ranked teams Boeheim has done pretty well. According to Mike Waters of Syracuse.com’s research (stats up to October 2007) and a little research of my own (via ESPN Syracuse Schedules 2007-Present): Boeheim has won 136 games versus ranked teams during the regular season since 1976. (this number, at least for my research, does not include Big East or ACC tournament games). Overall he has a 136-138 record in the regular season versus ranked teams, but since 2007 he has gone 42-35.
Big East & ACC Conference Records
In conference play, Boeheims teams have been a consistent winner. In Big East regular season games Boeheim has a record of 366-192; while in ACC games his team is 40-23. That’s a combined conference record of 406-215.
In addition, he has won 10 Big East Regular Season Championships and five Big East Tournaments Championships.
Boeheim coached the 2nd longest NCAA men’s basketball game of all-time: A Syracuse 6OT victory over UCONN in the 2009 Big East tournament. The game lasted 3 hours and 46 minutes and spanned over two days.

Boeheim also has been to the NCAA tournament, aka the Big Dance a lot. He has been there 32 years out of the 41 years he’s coached. He has a 57-31 record in the tournament and has been to 5 Final Fours. His team also made it to 6 NIT tournaments meaning his team has made the postseason 38 out of 41 years which is pretty incredible.
The biggest achievement of Jim Boeheims career though, as all Syracuse fans know, is that he has one NCAA Championship in 2003. That 81-78 victory was over 2nd-seeded Kansas. Syracuse was a three-seed that year.
Other Notable Achievments as Head Coach at Syracuse University
All in all, Syracuse Basketball has been in excellent hands under coach Boeheim. He knows not only how to win, but trains kids to be the best they can be both on and off the court.
In terms of leading players to the pros, he has led 46 Syracuse players to the NBA since 1976. The most famous one of them all, Carmelo Anthony still plays in the NBA to this day. 10 players were also Consensus All-Americans, the last being CJ Fair in 2014.
