While the Syracuse football team ended their losing streak they didn’t do it because of their head coach. It wasn’t all rainbows and ice cream, lets analyze.

So the question is was I wrong?  Let’s break down the answer.

This is my Syracuse football follow-up piece to my preview from yesterday, which you can find below!

"Syracuse Football: Time for head coach Dino Babers to set up"

The student body … Well if you read the headlines I was dead wrong.  The headlines read ‘Syracuse announces season high home attendance versus Virginia Tech!’

So you are thinking that guy who has been giving us a hard time needs to shut up.  Not so fast my friends let’s break it down for you.  The season high attendance was 33,838 (and that number is suspect watching my TV screen but ok) however that is only 2,500 more than the fewest fans in Carrier Dome history that showed up when we faced the juggernaut from Colgate in our season opener.

More than 30% of the seats in the Carrier Dome were empty or approximately a third.  When the Orange are facing a top 25 opponent.  This needs to change. The team deserves better and I will leave it at that.  I would like to congratulate that 33,838 for doing their best to bring back the glory days.

They came through in the clutch, with the game on the line and Virginia Tech with the ball facing a 3rd and 11, 7:10 to play in regulation the Loud House came alive.  Disrupting the Tech play with the 12th man in full effect.  They also gave the student-athletes the recognition they deserve storming the field to celebrate this well fought victory.

As far as the rest of you who wouldn’t walk up the hill, look through the couch cushions get your three bucks together and carry your lazy butts to the Dome to support our Orange!

Dino, Dino, Dino … I guess you can’t help yourself.  You believe too much of your own press and the Orange won the game not because of you but in spite of you.  Now you are thinking to yourself: What is he talking about?!?  Well I’ll tell you with some examples.

  • Early in first ½ Syracuse was up by seven, three and two at our own 40 and Dino called for a shot, 40 yards down the field with a very low probability of success and it resulted in an incomplete pass and wasted field position.
  • 1st and goal from the 1?  What do we do?  Well 3 straight low percentage passes followed by a QB sneak.
  • Good field position at the edge of our field goal kickers range, Dungey comes off the field after a nasty hit from behind.  Out trots our backup QB. What do we call for the guy right off the bench?  Well instead of a run up the middle with a good shot at three points we put him in shotgun of course one bad snap later, points were lost.
  • On several FG attempts Dino was slow to decide whether or not he was going for it or not, this resulted in rushing the kick and misses.
  • I commend the innovative play calling of a wide receiver pass but let’s keep that to once per game shall we? Three times is not the charm resulting in a huge loss and flip of field possession.

So to summarize no one proved me wrong but both the student body and Dino showed me a little bit that they are capable of helping the team out.

To the Orange team who led this one pillar to post, never trailed in the game and the only hidden stat is they should have blown Tech off the field (if it wasn’t for bad coaching decisions) a job well done.  Now with bowl eligibility still in sight let’s go kick some Boston College Eagles ASS!
