Boeheim Ejected, Orange Lose to Duke

The Syracuse Orange not only lost their second game in a row Saturday night, but they also lost their head coach at the end of the game.

The Duke Blue Devils beat the top ranked Orange 66-60 and a late charge call on C.J. Fair that Jim Boeheim didn’t agree with left him furious, and he received two technical fouls, giving the Blue Devils four shots and he was ejected with ten seconds remaining. Fair had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Orange, while Jerami Grant added 17 and eight. Jabari Parker led all scorers with 19 points and ten rebounds.

The whole game was a defensive battle and the Orange struggled in the first half, going just 10-35 from the field, but they led by as much as seven. Duke finished the half on a 10-3 run and it was tied at 26 heading into the break. The second half was a back and forth battle. By the 12:51 mark in the second half, both Baye Moussa Keita and Rakeem Christmas had four fouls for the Orange, but the game was tied at 41 with over ten minutes left. A foul call on Michael Gbinije that could have gone either way went in Duke’s favor and resulted in a three-point play for Parker, giving them a 44-41 lead. The Orange weren’t quite able to tie the game from that point on, but had a chance as they got the ball with 24 seconds left down 60-58. This is when Fair made the game-tying layup but was called for a charge, Boeheim received the technicals, and Quinn Cook sealed the game by making three of his four technical free throws.

The Orange ended up shooting 24-62, (38 percent) from the field and just 2-9 from beyond the arc. They did out rebound the Blue Devils 37-34 and grabbed 16 on the offensive end. Tyler Ennis had one of his worst games of the season, scoring nine points on just 2-13 shooting. Trevor Cooney also struggled from the field as well, shooting just 1-5 and 0-3 from three. The Blue Devils shot 48 percent on the game and hit seven of their 21 three-point attempts. The Orange are now 25-2 (12-2) and are in second place in the ACC behind Virginia (14-1 in conference play).

The Orange will be in College Park, Maryland for their next game against the Maryland Terrapins on Monday. Tip is at 7 p.m. ET.
