Fans will be partying like it’s 1984 in the Carrier Dome Wednesday night as the Syracuse Orange will be wearing throwback jerseys against former Big East rival and current ACC foe Boston College.
The top-ranked Orange, 25-0 (12-0), are wearing Nike jerseys that are apart of the “Respect the Future, Represent the Future” line by the brand, and are wearing these jerseys against the Eagles thirty years after Dwayne “Pearl” Washington’s miracle half-court buzzer heater to beat them in 1984. The jerseys have cursive writing on the front, just like the jerseys worn that season. Washington will be in attendance for the game.
This will be the second matchup between the two teams on the season, the Orange getting the best of the Eagles the first time 69-59 in Chestnut Hill. The Orange were only up two points heading into halftime and trailed by as much as eight points in the second half before finishing the game on a 25-9 run to eventually pull away for their 17th win on the season. Trevor Cooney led all scorers with 21 points on 8-13 shooting and Jerami Grant added 16 points and eight rebounds. Lonnie Jackson led the Eagles with 18 points on 6-9 three-point shooting.
After two straight one-point victories, the Orange could use a game where they are able to pull away from an opponent. If they want to do that, they will have to play better defense against the Eagles this time, as they shot 50 percent from the field against the Orange and hit on nine of their 21 three-point attempts. Both of those marks are the third best by any Syracuse opponent on the season.
The Orange also did do a lot of things right in the first game that they will look to continue. They shot 4-10 from three and 45 percent from the field. If the Orange want to get back on track offensively after shooting just 35 percent against NC State on Saturday, the Eagles aren’t a and team to do that against, as their 74.5 points allowed per game is 280th in the country. They are also 310th and 304th in the nation in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal defense. The Eagles are 6-19 and their defense is a big part of the reason why.
The Pick: The Orange defense has been slacking as well for their standards. In the last eight games, they have only averaged 5.7 steals per game, dragging their season average down to 8.3 per game. Last time the two teams met, they forced the Eagles into 16 turnovers, 13 of them being steals. The throwback jerseys will be an added motivation for the Orange and it should be a fun night at the Carrier Dome. The Orange won’t give their fans heart attacks tonight, as they beat the Eagles 80-60.
