Number Five: The Syracuse Zone Shuts Down Indiana (3/28/2013)

When the final horn sounded for this game, Orange fans could taste the Final Four. I know I haven’t released the full list of top games of the season, but here is a little disclosure: The Marquette win in the Elite Eight is not on the list. Why you ask? Because this was the game. When Syracuse completely shut down Indiana, the nations #1 team for the majority of the season, it was clear that no team was going to stop Syracuse en route to Atlanta.

The Hoosiers were held to just 50 points in this game, the lowest offensive output of the season for Indiana. Syracuse forced 19 turnovers, and recorded 10 blocks in the game. All against a team that played in the “vaunted” Big Ten, which was considered by many as the best conference in college basketball.

Leading up to this game, bad memories were rehashed with images of Keith Smart popping up everywhere for Syracuse fans to cry over. On a week that started off watching the 1987 Syracuse team lose in the national championship, it ended watching the 2013 Syracuse team cut down the nets as East Regional champions. This game was only the Sweet Sixteen game, but it mind as well have been the regional finals, as the Hoosiers were easily the biggest threat to derailing the Orange’s season.

Michael Carter-Williams led the way for Syracuse in this one, scoring 24 points on 9 of 19 shooting. MCW hit three deep balls, and added 4 steals and 5 rebounds. For anyone that had doubts about Carter-Williams potential decision to go pro at the time, was not surprised once the decision was made when the season was over after seeing this performance.
