Syracuse-California: Preview and Prediction

The Syracuse Orange look to get back in the Sweet 16 with a victory over the California Golden Bears. Tip off is set for around 9:50 tonight.

California comes in to the game feeling like they have a lot to prove. The Golden Bears won 12 games in the Pac 12 conference this season, yet only received a 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Cal has bad blowout losses to Washington and Wisconsin, but those games took place back in January.

Lately, California has been difficult to predict. The Golden Bears won 7 in a row over the month of February, including wins over Arizona, UCLA, and Oregon. Cal followed the winning streak up with back to back losses to Stanford and Utah before entering the NCAA Tournament.

California has two players averaging double figures in scoring. Guards Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs are capable of knocking down the three, and will have to do so if the Bears are going to beat Syracuse tonight. Cobbs and Crabbe each had a good game for Cal in the first round, with the Bears grabbing 40 rebounds in the contest. This will be a tall task against the Orange, who rank in the top 20 in the nation in rebounding. Unless Cal can grab a lot of long rebounds offensively, it should be a difficult night on the glass against Syracuse.

Here are the probable starting lineups for tonight:

California

Syracuse

#33 Richard Solomon, F, Junior

#43 James Southerland, F, Senior

#45 David Kravish, F, Sophomore

#5 CJ Fair, F, Junior

#1 Justin Cobbs, G, Junior

#20 Brandon Triche, G, Senior

#3 Tyrone Wallace, G, Freshman

#1 Michael Carter-Williams, G, Sophomore

#23 Allen Crabbe, G, Junior

#25 Rakeem Christmas, F, Sophomore

I believe that this game should be another one that Syracuse doesn’t have too much trouble with. While I definitely think California is better than Montana, this is a team that Syracuse should be able to take care of business against. While anything can happen (Georgetown…hahahahahahahaha), Syracuse is more athletic than this team and should find themselves in the Sweet 16 by the nights end. This game is a virtual road game that will have a California friendly crowd, but I believe Syracuse should be able to overcome the adversity for the victory.

Prediction

Syracuse 71

California 60
