Syracuse Women Fall To Maryland 19-11 In Home Opener

The Syracuse Orange women lost their Dome opener Sunday, falling to 4th ranked Maryland 19-11. The Terps pulled away in the second half after an action packed first half that saw a lot of ties and close play. Syracuse trailed 8-6 by intermission, and a quick 3 goal run by the Terps to start the second half extended a Maryland lead to five that Syracuse never recovered from. The Orange were outscored 11-5 in the second half.

All-American senior Michelle Tumolo led the Orange with six points. Her four goals and two assists moved her up on Syracuse’s all-time points list, putting her in fourth place. Junior Alyssa Murray also added four points for Syracuse.

The loss was the first time in nine home openers that the Orange were defeated. The preseason #1/#2 team in the country never led in the contest, and really adhered to Maryland’s style of play. This was a statement win for Maryland, and an indication that Syracuse has a lot of learn and improve on going forward.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Orange, who next host Virginia next Sunday. The Cavaliers are a top ten team who is a traditional lacrosse powerhouse. Face off is set for 1:00 from Syracuse.
