A pair of Triche free throws cut the deficit to two at the first TV timeout in the second half. The teams then traded the lead with buckets by Rakeem Christmas and Mouphtaou Yarou before Michael Carter-Williams hit a three to give Syracuse a 40-39 lead.
Two CJ Fair free throws, followed by a Villanova turnover and a pair from Jerami Grant at the charity stripe capped an 11-2 Orange run. Jay Wright then took another timeout with 12:24 remaining, with Syracuse ahead 44-39.
Yarou made his fifth field goal, and following a Michael Carter-Williams free throw Baye Keita picked up his 4th foul with around 11 minutes remaining. Jerami Grant then picked up his 3rd foul with 10:49 remaining in the game, putting Villanova in the bonus at the free throw line.
Two Villanova free throws cut the Syracuse lead to 1, and another foul called on Jerami Grant gave him his fourth foul, and Daniel Ochefu went 1 of 2 at the line to tie the game at 47 with 8:39 left in the game.
Villanova retook the lead 49-47 with 8:02 left in the game, following another foul call. It was the fifth consecutive possession a foul was called on the floor, with the count up to 34 fouls in 28 minutes of play.
The teams then traded the lead back and forth, before Jerami Grant fouled out with 5:22 remaining and a one point Syracuse lead.
Villanova failed to convert on two free throws, and Brandon Triche hit a three, extending the ‘Cuse lead to four. Triche then came down and hit a huge shot in the paint to give Syracuse a 59-53 lead with 4:23 left in the ballgame. The shot capped a 7-0 Syracuse run, and Jay Wright had to take another timeout.
Baye Keita then fouled out with 4:06 left in the game, and Jim Boeheim turned to DaJuan Coleman for the remainder of the game.
Two Yarou free throws and a CJ Fair field goal later, Syracuse forced a turnover and began to milk the clock with a six point lead and three minutes on the clock. A Michael Carter-Williams turnover and a CJ Fair goal tending call cut the lead to four with 2:45 left.
After a CJ fair miss, the ball went out of bounds off Villanova giving Syracuse a fresh shot clock. Syracuse then turned it over, and another foul call put Yarou at the free throw line again down four with 1:06 to play. Yarou converted one of two free throws, making it 61-58.
After a Carter-Williams miss in traffic, Ryan Arcidiacono missed a wide open three pointer from the corner, giving Syracuse the ball with 19.9 seconds on the clock.
