Syracuse had five players in double figures as the Orange cruised past Bloomsburg 103-60 Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. The win was the final preseason game before Syracuse heads out west to face San Diego State on the “Battle of the Midway” on November 9.
Brandon Triche led all scorers with 23 points on 9 of 11 shooting. James Southerland chipped in 17 points, and was a key player off the bench. The Syracuse defense stifled the Bloomsburg offense, holding the Huskies to just 60 points and forcing 25 turnovers. The game was put away in the final ten minutes of the first half, when Syracuse held just a 26-20 lead. The Orange then went on a 36-4 run and never looked back.
To me, the biggest part of this final tune up was seeing Trevor Cooney in action for the first time this season. With his quick release, he could be absolutely deadly this season from three if he can hit his shots. Cooney went 2 of 5 from three for 6 points. He definitely seemed like he was in the flow of things though, and will definitely make an impact once he gets a little more comfortable as the season moves forward. Cooney was recovering from a tonsil operation, and Jim Boeheim said after the game that missing time definitely played a factor in him coming back in the flow:
“It was good to get Trevor [Cooney] out there. He has missed about 14 days of practice, so it will take him a little time to get back, but he’ll have a couple days this week.
When asked how he felt out there today, Cooney agreed that a few days of practice will do him good.
“It was better than I thought it was. I’ve only put it together with two days of practice before this. I look forward to this week of practice before Friday.”
Syracuse has looked impressive in these first two exhibition games, but it is really tough to gauge where this team is at when they are playing undersized division 2 teams. The Orange executed flawlessly at times, while making bad passes and having silly turnovers in other moments. I believe it is safe to say that we saw exactly what we expected out of these two preseason games, and November 9th out in California we will see where this team stands.
