Carmelo Anthony came off the bench and scored nine points as team USA easily handled France in their first official game of the 2012 olympics. Carmelo also snagged 9 rebounds for the Americans. Kevin Durant led the team with 22 points on 6 of 13 shooting, while also grabbing 9 rebounds. Team USA next plays Tunisia Tuesday at 5:15 EST.

There have been multiple rumors swirling about the potential age for an olympian on the USA men’s basketball team to not exceed 23, and this has been a big topic of debate. I believe that in world competition, each country should put their best athletes forward, regardless if there are blowouts or not. Generating interest for olympic basketball is not team USA’s job, but rather they are supposed to compete and represent our country and try to win a gold medal. I believe that changing the rules because team USA is too talented is not right nor is it smart. To punish athletes for competing and winning at one of the highest levels with dominating scores and blowouts sends the wrong message of competition to anyone watching.
